It’s cultural, and I appreciate that I’m out of step with modern American norms.

I grew up in a place that hasn’t changed with the times though.

I like that though. Change isn’t always a good thing.

haha ok. didn't know there was a uniform for adults. you're an adult right? how about you act like one and quit giving a shite what other people wear.

What i wear on a plane has everything to do with where i'm going that day. If i'm going to a meeting, i'll be dressed nicely, slacks and a nice shirt, maybe a suit. If i'm on vacation or basically anything other than going on a business trip in which i have a meeting that same day i'm flying, shorts and a tshirt, unless i'm going somewhere it's snowing, then i'll put a jacket on.

Whenever I got to fly I look at all the people around me and think “How the hell do all these people have the $2k or whatever” for a trip?

And once again, this primarily boils down to people not wanting to be grossed out by fat and ugly people. I'm convinced of that.

Yep. Can't tell you how many times someone has been relieved to be next to tiny me (IN MY LEGGINGS AND TENNIS SHOES AND TEE SHIRT OMG!) instead of someone spilling into the seat next to them. Nobody has ever acted weird about my casual flying attire.

Female work attire is also quite different from male. I am significantly less comfortable in a dress and heels and full face of makeup/hair done. Women in a dress are only able to sit in one position - legs crossed and pulled up close. I'm not doing that for 5 hours.

I one time got on a plane, puddle jumper from BR to Dallas. Window seat. I shite you not a 300 lb woman sits next to me. Luckily it only lasted 2 minutes then she moved to the bench seat in the very rear (took up nearly two seats).

A very miserable 2 minutes of sitting under a heavily breathing woman. Would have been a miserable flight.

This all started when colleges started allowing women to walk around in Umbria running shorts and oversized t shirts. Now they’ve graduated and are attempting to hide their fat with yoga pants on the airplane. Sad!

You play the seat lottery game when youre at the gate waiting to get loaded? Theres always some huge mules and about 1 respectable looking girl in the whole load.

If you fly more than once a year, get TSA precheck.

I’ve thought about this, but it seems like lately I’ve seen the precheck line closed half the time. I was in DFW a few weeks ago, and sure enough they were just herding everyone through the long arse regular security line.

The “luxuries” that you can find in an airport aren’t worth the money unless you practically live in an airport, and then you are more than likely getting them for free. I prefer to just tough it out and consider it a small price to pay for being able to get anywhere on the planet in a matter of hours.

If you have to battle your way through flames, you'll want durable shoes, long pants and sleeve, and natural fibers. Survivors plan ahead to survive.

I also like to have one or more inoccuous items on my person that can be used as an improvised weapon.

People flying planes into buildings will change a few things

The FAA could have just beefed up the cockpit door. Instead of that they freaked out.

Airlines saw a chance to increase profit by dropping meals. Meals were standard on three hour flights. Right after 911 they stopped serving because "they couldn't hand out knives and forks". The younger generation has no idea how much flying has changed.

In 20 years they will have us sitting in saddle seats or standing up.

Maybe depends on why I'm there.

If you're concerned about how other people are dressed, the problem ain't the other fella.

Safety comes at a cost. I prefer smaller first class seats now and living to see another flight honestly.

This thread is pretty funny. You can tell who lives on airplanes and who doesn’t.

1) You can travel comfortably and not look like a slob
2) Fat people deserve to pay for two seats
3) Anyone who doesn’t have precheck and flies more than 1x per year is crazy. Clear is nice but not worth it with ore-check
4) Budget airlines attract budget individuals for the most part (exception is SW does have an amazing perk with the companion pass)
5) Security isn’t much different from airport to airport... just be conscience
6) Airports have people... yeah... learn how to find the quiet spots in an airport and you avoid the plebeians.

Shall I go on? Simply put, dress comfortably (I wear lululemon pants and a pullover), be smart about packing and security is a breeze with pre-check, and don’t fly budget low class airlines.

I don’t mind to much what anyone is wearing but for God’s sake take a decking bath and don’t bathe in Hi Karate.

When we were kids we wore a coat and tie and I don’t remember an movies being shown in the Lockheed L-1011 in 1976. I don’t remember movies until the 80’s and it was a big deal.

When I fly into China it’s a 28 hr ordeal.

Leave home at 3 a.m. to fly to Detroit, then the a 13 hr flight into Beijing, then another 4 hrs into my final destination.

I’m going for comfort on those flights and not to impress some minimum wage worker who scraped up enough money to pay for their cheap basic seat in coach.

I've never experienced it closed, but I do hear it happens. I've been lucky.

I flew threw the precheck line behind only 2 people yesterday, while everyone else took 20ish minutes to get through the regular line. I know this varies based on airport, day of week, time of year, etc. though. I got it purely for the no undressing aspect.

But you're right. If you only travel for leisure, one could argue that precheck isn't worth it because you're probably not planning things immediately for the time you land and/or doing something up until right before your flight home.
