A 61-year-old woman celebrating the new year with her family is dead after she was shot by celebratory gunfire, deputies say.
This happened just after midnight in the 12300 block of May Laurel Drive in the Laurel Oaks subdivision.
Authorities told ABC13 the woman, identified as Philippa Ashford, was standing at the end of the driveway while family and friends in the cul-de-sac were shooting off fireworks, when she suddenly clutched her body and said, "I think I've been shot."
She collapsed to the ground and died.
"At this point from our witnesses and seeing at the scene, we believe this may very well be a case of celebratory gunfire somewhere else in the neighborhood," said Sgt. Ben Beall with the Harris County Sheriff's Office. "No indication a family member or anyone else in the cul-de-sac was discharging a firearm.

You are pure trash if you fire a gun in the air on New Year's

Spen NYE in S'port a few years ago in a neighborhood not far from the hood and it was like a war zone.

If you live in a populated area it's stupid. Those bullets will come down somewhere. If you live on 300 acres in the middle of nowhere I don't really care.

I was skimmed through thread titles quickly and read this as Houston woman likely killed by celebrity giraffe. That would have been a much more interesting story.

It was a cultural experience for me that I am happy not to deal with on a regular basis.

I mean, it's obviously a no-brainer to not shoot in the air in a populated area...
But that is some shite-arse bad luck to be hit by a bullet and die in that situation. That bullet had a much greater chance of hitting the ground, or a roof as mentioned above, or whatever than it did of hitting a person.

It used to be so bad in St.Louis City, that the cops would go indoors 5mins before, and come back out 10 mins after. And 2-3 would be hurt or killed by errant bullets.
Pops told me you could hear the lead coming thru the trees like it was raining. Shotguns, handguns, auto, semi autos, being shot in the air aimlessly. It cut down over the years, but it was as if it was raining lead once it hit 12am.

If a bullet is fired 90 degrees to the ground (straight up) it will not be able to reach a velocity great enough to be lethal.
Still should not be done..
However, anything less than 90 degrees (not straight up), which is far more likely to happen, will likely be lethal.
I am in Houston, was at friend’s place....
At 12 there were a lot of fireworks, then there was a different sound. My friend who has never spent a day around guns said, “those are some big fireworks!”. But that was no firework, the idiots next door were shooting off their guns. I went outside and could see the muzzle flash just above the fence. Needless to say, my friend is now looking for a new place.
