This doesn't seem like all that much of a convenience for most people, when it's only a 3.5 hour drive now.
But you can get shite drunk for 90 minutes.

$75million could represent the funds being collected for a Federal match. OR, it could end up as a 3P.
I love the laughing at the perceived lack of funds raised.......ignorance is unbecoming.

Their feasibility report is a joke. And it's all being done in an incredibly shady fashion. We had to organize a PAC just to get people informed on the fact that this train may actually come into being. No one had any fricking clue about it.
For those who don't know, the plan, as it stands now, is to have the train station near the Northwest Mall just outside the 610 loop. Because that part of 610 needs more traffic. They had originally contemplated going down 45 to downtown but couldn't make it work even with their insane math because of all the property they'd have to condemn. Then they tried to bring it down TC jester to Washington to get downtown. But they hadn't thought about where to put the station, how much it would cost to condemn property in the heights and timbergrove, how big of an impact that would have on residential property values, nothing.
They showed pictures of fricking Japan where people basically ignore the elevated lines and eat and convene underneath them. I don't know that there could be two more different cultures than jam packed Japan and spread out Texas.
And I'm not from Louisiana.

Hopefully this is step in the direction of getting these all over the country. Would be great to hop a bullet train to other areas of the US.

I agree. To me it seems to be the next evolution though. The high speed rail is legit and will work.
High speed rail is more flexible and proven.
I think the more immediate potential innovation with Hyperloop is with the involvement of the Boring company. If they can figure out a way to efficiently and cheaply bore a train-sized tunnel at any depth in a variety of soils.....they could really make subway networks like those in Washington DC much more affordable.

yes, there's nothing better than giving control of your mobility to someone else. Just ask all those happy airline passengers. Especially when they get delayed.
I know this is a wet dream to urbanites who think cars are the devil, but why don't you just hop on a plane? do you think the trains will be any less trashy or inconvenient than air travel?

This is a very legitimate concern.
Hurricanes should be minimal and I am sure the can design it to withstand up to an F2 maybe. F5 would rip it out of the ground.
If cost was not an option though, I guess they could bunker the whole thing. However it is supposed to be elevated.
Maybe design it for easy quick repair though. Very modular.

I get the concern over having rail flyovers all over the place, but if you only built these things where there is no traffic or development, you'd essentially have no market for riders.

Hyperloop is still only an alternative "in theory".

Why yes, yes I do.
Think airlines before the TSA. It wasn't luxury, but it wasn't this...

Oh my, 640 miles of dirt and rock. They would need to develop lasers that melt rock

That area is really the only feasible spot for a station. There's already a depot there. Just insane the amount of infrastructure that will have to be built around there just so people can still get to the Galleria area on 610 because 610 the west loop is one of the most heavily trafficked highways in the country.

I hope you're right. I like the idea that this is being done privately and not by govt. However, I'm afraid of (inevitable) gov't involvement that will frick it up.
still have to get a shitton of cooperation from landowners. I'd imagine there are strong feelings on this from them.

Please tell me you are part of the due diligence and not some know-it-all, oil and gas engineer moonlighting as a Transit Planning expert.

Also, that's not really true. Airports were originally built in the middle of nowhere in most cities and several cities still have them in the middle of nowhere. Denver springs to mind.

That I agree with. I mentioned earlier there will be some (rightfully) very bitter rural Texans.

And when they have a viable route up and running with a capacity of riders that rival trains or buses, they'll move beyond being just a theoretical alternative to cars or high speed rail, which itself struggles to compete with air travel in this country.
