20 years, 700 victims: Southern Baptist sexual abuse spreads as leaders resist reforms

In the decade since Vasquez's appeal for help, more than 250 people who worked or volunteered in Southern Baptist churches have been charged with sex crimes, an investigation by the Houston Chronicle and the San Antonio Express-News reveals.

It's not just a recent problem: In all, since 1998, roughly 380 Southern Baptist church leaders and volunteers have faced allegations of sexual misconduct, the newspapers found. That includes those who were convicted, credibly accused and successfully sued, and those who confessed or resigned. More of them worked in Texas than in any other state.

I'm really confused at that article.

The title says 700, then in the text it says 380 since 1998 and that includes "volunteers".

Hardly seems like some pandemic of abuse by church elders like you see with Catholicism.

ETA:. Oh I see, 700 victims, 380 accused/convicted

21 year old volunteers as assistant youth minister, bangs 16-17 year old, qualifies for this list? I guarantee that a large percentage of these sexual abuse cases are similar to that scenario, as opposed to a 40 year old priest sodomizing 12 year old boys.

How's it any different than the teachers y'all are always posting about that's fresh out of college and banging HS kids?

But in all seriousness, if you're in a position of authority you shouldn't be using that to access your next piece of arse. Whether it's church, school, etc. It's still an issue. And using church when the tenants of Southern Baptist religion are adamantly against pre-marital sex anyway? Come on now.

That's what's supposed to happen when kids get molested. Not passed along to the next parish.

I'm not.

Wiki has 50000 priests/bishops/whatever accused since 1950 which is 833 a year.

This article has 380 accused in 20, and some undisclosed numbers of those are "church volunteers" (not even preachers) for 19 a year

Sorry your pope is a communist and your church hides kid rape

How many Catholics are there in the world vs Southern Baptists?

We should wait for someone trying to draw an equivalence between Baptists and Catholics before making these kinds of comments.

It is great to see criminals actually charged with the crimes they committed, regardless of religion.

These numbers are from the US, not the world. But if you want to look up that info and correct per capita, we can certainly discuss it. But we'd at least have to find out how many of the 380 are actually affiliated with the Baptist Church and not just volunteers looking for an excuse to diddle kids

Comment was purely anecdotal.

There are monsters in every religion and in every Christian denomination. It isn't just limited to a single denomination. However, I would expect the Catholic Church's list to be longer as it is the one, true church. The only way for the devil to continue to keep Christians divided is by continuing to attack the church which Jesus founded.

If you do the research, you will find that the incidence of sexual abuse within the Catholic clergy is the same as in the general population, as is probably the case with any other organization, including the SBC. THIS IS NOT TO SAY that the Catholic Church didn't make appalling errors in how it dealt with the issue internally on an institutional level.

But it is highly ironic that in a thread where the Catholic Church is mentioned nowhere in the OP that the third and fourth comments display disgusting anti-Catholic bigotry. And why? Because the article in the OP goes against the narrative - very common among Baptists in particular - that the Catholic Church is some kind of demoic pedo cult when in reality, it is just an uncommonly large organization with the same kinds of problems that you run into in any organization - including the SBC.

The article reads exactly like someone trying to say "the Catholic Church ain't all that bad, look the Baptists have predators too!!"

When in reality, as another poster alluded, the Baptists put their predators in jail. Catholics send them to the next parish.

If that's what you got out of the article, I don't know what to tell you.
