modern houses without front porches.

overt “open floor” plans

light colored or painted brick.

houses with driveways only the length of the a car.

neighborhoods without sidewalks and/or front yard mailboxes.

$600k+ house….garage is left with nothing but studs.

owners who don’t put in landscaping.

pools with the spa/hot tub between the back patio and the pool. your kids/dog are going to drown and you’ll never know.

A poor layout of a house with regard to the lot bothers me.

A new very nice lake house two lots down from us was recently built on a nice lot but they made two very bad mistakes with regard to the layout of the house with respect to the lot.

First mistake is they built a side entry 3 car garage with an inadequate amount of side driveway room to easily get cars in and out of the garage. It's not going to be easy for them to get in and out of their their garages. It is not possible to extend the side driveway to gain more room. The garages face a slope down to a creek. If you back a vehicle out of one of the garages, not only do you have an issue turning, but if you happen to run off of the concrete driveway, you're on the edge of a sloping dropoff.

The second bad layout mistake is on the lake side of the house they built a "lake view blocking" pool house near the garage end of the house. There are no windows in the lake side garage wall, nor in the lake side of the pool house which is poorly located to begin with. The end result is that probably 40% of the possible lake view from the back and sides of the main house is totally blocked.

This is a brand new multi million dollar house with two ultra stupid layout flaws.

Not having a sink in the garage. I have had to add one in the last two houses I’ve owned.

Never even thought of having a sink in the garage. What do you use it for?

Washing dirty tools, my hands, filling watering cans, drinking …keeps me from going in the house and risking the wrath of Ms. Midlothian

I guess the few tools I ever use never need to be washed.

House design features that bother you

Right now, I have a TV over the fireplace. My next house, I will not have a TV over the fireplace. It's a terrible idea long term.

Also, one pet peeve of mine is that you see the 500k plus homes --- and the builder cheapens out and puts a plastic utility sink in the laundry room with the cheapest faucet fixture.

Another pet peeve of mine is again when you see these 500k plus homes, and they have either Maytag or Frigidaire appliances. No knock against them, and I am sure parts are readily available, but at this price point, one should expect to see Whirlpool at a minimum, with KitchenAid or Bosch appliances thrown in.

I hate that in so many homes the thermostat for the bedrooms is actually in the area that is controlled by the other air unit. For example we have 2 units. One for the bedrooms and my office and one for the hallway, kitchen, dining room and family room. The later unit is all the open areas and connected. The bedrooms and office can be closed off. But the air around the bedroom unit is from the other unit. (think i said that right).

The freaking thermostat for the bedrooms should be in the master bedroom!

I'm not a fan of single basin sinks

Once I got a single basin sink I never wanted to go back. I love being able to put a big pot or cutting board in the sink.

What size pot are you unable to fit in your sink? We entertain for 8 and 10 very often and haven't had an issue with any pot size.

I like the double-basin. But to each their own.

One of the reasons I love my home built 50+ years ago. The material. Everything is solid and substantial. Crafted, real wood and brick. I've learned it was built by an architect and it shows.

Looking at the addition, the extensive brickwork...if I tried to have it rebuilt today, at modern prices...100k easily, just for the outside.

They really don't make things like they used to
