The subway system in New York is great. The Financial District is pretty dead at night, but the good thing is that almost every main subway line is really close by. There is usually a line within a couple blocks that will take you to any area of Manhattan you need and you won't have to worry about switching trains.

One other tidbit about the fidi, unlike the rest of NYC, the streets are not laid out in a grid. It is easy to get turned around down there. Also, there is not much sunlight due to the buildings.

Went back in October and stayed at the double tree in Times Square. Room was huge for NY but not cheap. I think it was $440 a night. It was our first time going and we wanted to be in Times Square. It was worth it for us to be in Times Square. We did a lot of shopping and went back to the room to put bags up and go back out.
It was really easy to catch a cab from Times Square and get to other parts of the city but harder to get back to TS but not impossible.
When we go back I probably wouldn't mind staying up closer to Central Park.

It is ok. Close to Legends (LSU Bar) and Macy's. The area around Macy's can be a shite show around Christmas time. How long are you staying and what do you want to do?

Financial district is indeed less expensive but the area is dead when the sun goes down and you are quite isolated. It takes a while to get to midtown or uptown by cab or subway.
I highly recommend Sofitel in midtown on 44th or 45th Street (can't remember which specifically off top of my head). This is my favorite hotel in Manhattan. You walk to Times Square in a few minutes to the west, or walk one block to the east and shop on 5th Avenue. Central Park is not far away and the subway is convenient.
The hotel is very nice and service is great. You can get a suite with a king bed and sitting room that is quite large and get an adjoining room with a queen bed. The two rooms can be closed off by door from the rest of the main floor and you have your own private hallway connected the two separate rooms. This is a great option with kids.

What do you plan on doing while there? With or without SO? Young or old?
So many variables and options it's hard to make recs without more detail.

You can get to midtown in less than 15 minutes from the fidi via the 2 or 3. It is only 4 or 5 stops.

I'll be there for 4 days 4 nights with the SO. Just there to sight see and go out at night. Maybe go to a concert. She hasn't been before and its been several years for me. Prob won't do a whole lot of shopping. Just kind of go with the flow and experience christmas time there.
ETA: Financial District has been ruled out

Gotcha. The Hilton Garden Inn on West 35th is probably your best bet. Close to the Empire State Building, the library and the subway (east and west).

The Row hotel?
I recommend against it. Too close to the bus terminal and the tunnel. Traffic will be shite.
