If he was planning to head out of the city the next day to meet a buddy for some hunting (I don't even know what's in season right now)...my level of suspicion would go down. If we find out he lied to the wife and said he was going to be in Des Moines having beers with a college buddy or his search history turns up some nefarious stuff, well, that's a different story.
But at face value, with what we know, suspicious as frick.
Oh yeah, it absolutely is very sketchy at face value. Especially in Chicago proper. Just so weary of media witch hunt since they’re so anti-gun. I’m not defending this guy at all though.

And you're such a brainless sheep, you'll believe anything the media tells you if it tells you what you want to hear. In this case, its "the 104 people shot over three days and the almost 20 killed is not a real threat. The real threat is still white-wing extremist gun nuts!" frick you.

I'm not sure, but he picked up two gun charges. I'm guessing the laws he broke and was charged on by the FBI and Chicago police were not made up on the spot.

Non residents do not require an FOID card, but it is required for them to have the gun unloaded and in a case if not in specific areas, like gun range or while hunting
Its a complete bullshite law, but if you are bringing guns into Illinois, especially Chicago, you should probably be aware of these things
