MIL’s hot water heater is out. Most likely the pilot just needs to be relit. With that said, I won’t be able to get to it until tomorrow afternoon. In the meantime, does she need to turn a gas valve off or anything?

If the water is already hot, why do you need a water heater?

If she can turn the valve off, she can relight the pilot

Maybe I’m a gay married guy and my MIL used to be my FIL?

Still interested?

Queen's English, right der.

Gas feed to said Heater will turn off automagically -- actually it already has, which is why she has no heated hot water.

When replacing this, consider a cold water heater to save a few bucks and relieve a level of redundancy.

Sorry about all the A H comments from your OT Brothers ! The instructions for relighting the pilot is usually clearly marked . No need to shut off the gas if it won’t relight !

It’s rare, but if the thermocouple is bad, it will not stop the flow of gas automatically. If it is convenient, I would have her turn the valve off on the front of the water heater.

Gas valve indoor? Outdoors?

Both go boom with enough spark.

This would explain why you had to create a thread for this simple question.
