Horse Betting Primer/Strategy? Evangeline Downs Tonight
Posted on 7/16/16 at 8:25 am

I've only been to the races a handfull of times. Taking a few friends to Evangeline Downs this evening.
I think I usually bet trifecta boxes, hoping to hit one all night, which pretty much pays for the night.
I'd like some better tips or strategies... Anything is appreciated.

Bet the jockey, not the horse.

If you're determined to bet every race, sticking with the top two or three jockeys and trainers will put you on the best horses in the race, usually. You can get down in the weeds with speed figures and whether the odds on a horse are higher or lower than they should be, but if you're just out for a good time, that should be sufficient to give you a winner or two.
My GF has been around horses all her life and can tell which ones are ready to run by looking at them in the post parade. I'm a numbers guy and try to find what I'm looking for in the past performances.

That's all excellent advice but if you want to have fun, get a bunch of drinks in you, bet solely by which names you like best and always lay a group bet on a long shot just to get everyone with you fired up.

Thanks...
Who are top jockeys at ED?
The big name guys are there now?

Buy a pink (tip) sheet. Bet $2 on each ($3 may be the min) Win Place or Show bets on the 3 you like each best.
You should cash a lot of tickets but still be in he hole unless you bet long shots that hit.
Or put those top 3 in an Exacta box to win on any of those 3 horses coming in 1st & 2nd. I think that's a minimum $18 bet to box 3 horses.
Trifectas are much harder to hit.
The Daily Racing Form will have all the Jockey and horse stats. You can probably buy one somewhere this am, to do some prep work.

I don't go a lot but my strategy is to wait a couple minutes before race and bet the 3 or 4 biggest longshots. Or bet big on the favorites. All to win.

Thanks folks...

It's kind of a shite show there. I hate betting evd. It's crooked as hell.
Just bet broberg. Even if the horse was beat by 20 last out at a lower level and claimed by him. "Somehow" they always move way up

I'm good friends with Stevie borque(sp?). I don't go much anymore, but when I went weekly, he would give me a signal about his horse (good or bad) and if he was on a winner. If so, I bet it across the board. I also would strike the 2 worst horses and wheel the exacta with the rest.

Use the CT strategy. It's my system when I don't feel like jamming into the racing form and just want to drink and watch the ponies.
Throw out the favorite and bet the next three lowest odds horses in $1 exacta and trifecta boxes.

This is especially true at Evangeline.
It's almost as if they know the order of finish before the race is run...

My two horse people in the same thread. Gonna get me a scratch off after work. That's more of my betting style.
Anyway hello to both of you.
