I can count on one hand the times I have gone 80 in a year.

So other than that one trip to Atlanta, where else have you driven.

Because 80 will get your arse run over in Hotlanta

A car wont survive against a 3/4 ton pick up.

Depends on the car and the dynamics of the impact. I've seen an S-class Mercedes and a Silverado 1500 both obliterated in a collision, the Mercedes was going between 80-100mph. The truck was cut completely in half and exploded killing both occupants. The Mercedes occupants survived but with serious injuries.

It is true that a large truck has an advantage in a head on collision with most cars. Trucks are more dangerous in accidents that don't involve other vehicles, like a rollover.

That's very sad. A beautiful woman. Her poor children.

Imagine just being on your way home from work and getting smoked from behind like that. At least we can assume she never knew what hit her.

Why do cars need the ability to go this fast? Car manufacturers should governor vehicles to only go a max of 80. Absolutely no reason to go faster than that.
Sorry, but I hate your argument here, for a multitude of reasons. I'll give a few:
1) setting a governor to 80 would probably cut traffic fatalities by, maybe, half a percent. By that logic, let's set governors to 15 MPH and cut fatalities by 85%!!
2) surely there would be a new expense passed onto the customer, as the governors are installed, inspected, replaced, etc.
3) reminds me of a call for installation of some back-seat child device to keep kids from being forgotten and dying of the heat. Make it mandatory for what, $350 per vehicle, to save, what, 5 kids per year? Maybe 9 kids in a bad year.
4) no time travel if no 88 MPH

Just not enough bang for the buck. Air-bags and seat belts? Yea, those save tens of thousands of lives annually in the U.S., maybe hundreds of thousands.
