Seeing as I have raced at Road America, not just hot lapped with the tea and crumpets crowd, and regularly turn off the stability control in my daily driver truck you are mistaken.

Of course the limits are higher in a performance car. I never said otherwise and to imply I did is ridiculous on your part.

When one is more concerned with bring hit by another driver I'll take mass over the slightly higher cornering/braking ability of a typical car.

A while back I was hit head on on by a dumbass driver. My child and I walked away from the accident with minor bumps and bruises. I was in a full sized pickup. If I were in a smaller vehicle that day, I probably wouldn't have survived the wreck and definitely wouldn't have walked away from it. I won't say I drive a large truck for this purpose, but you can bet your arse I spent more time than ever researching safety and crash ratings for my replacement vehicle. I drive very conservative b/c I don't trust the other dipshits on the road.

I agree 100% anything short of an M1A1 with full airbags is a death trap in the right (wrong) circumstances. There is no way to account for every idiot, the generally safe driver that makes a very bad mistake or the freak accidents where mother nature intervenes.

I think that everyone can agree that smaller automobiles have at least some advantage over pickup trucks and full-size SUVs in avoiding accidents. But on the other hand, in general, trucks and SUVs are safer from an accident survivability standpoint.

So this leads to the question, which would you prefer to have for you and your family? The auto that has a better chance at avoiding an accident, or the auto that gives you and your family a better chance at surviving an accident?

I’m not going to suppose that I can answer this question for anyone else other than myself and my family. And personally, I’ll take the pick-up truck 10 times out of 10. My reasons for this are (1) simply by driving like a normal sane person, a modern full-size pick-up can avoid accidents quite easily and (2) if you end up in an accident (which oftentimes is not your fault and unavoidable as was the case with the victims of the crash in the OP) the pick-up truck vastly improves your chances at surviving the crash.

Thus, and this is only my opinion, from a safety standpoint, the pick-up truck is far and above the best choice.

Funny I raced SCCA FP, GT1 and GP and I never met anyone that only raced at one track. I'll be at Road Atlanta and Barber in Oct and VIR in Dec, you should come out and play.

In the end active safety is higher in cars, passive safety is at best a wash for trucks but lower compared to the best cars. The IIHS stats don't lie trucks have a higher incidence of fatalities than small cars and small SUVs. Mass is certainly good in some types of crashes and bad in others but convincing yourself that a truck is an overall safer vehicle to drive is just fooling yourself.

ETA: Love that some clown is downvoting when actual statistics and data overwhelmingly show there is no correlation between a larger vehicle and crash survival.

I’m sorry, but you’re dead wrong. Read the Edmunds link I provided. Close to the bottom it shows a chart that lists the deaths per million for each type of vehicle. Compare the small car rate of 46 deaths per million to the large SUV rate of 14 and Very Large SUV rate of 13 deaths per million. You’ll also see death rates for all pick-up truck sizes are lower than their respective car size counterparts.

The numbers don’t lie. SUVs & trucks are safer according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Here’s further details.

30 feet between white lines on a highway, it took the pickup 0.16 seconds to travel that distance which works out to 180 feet per second or 122 MPH

Not that I needed to read a study to know a 6000 pound SUV is inherently safer than a 3000 pound car.

That car was completely obliterated.


This video is also why I’ll never drive a car and will always be in a full size truck. I don’t care what the crash rating is. Compare the 2500 Silverado to the little car
