I don't know about the gun free zone part, but I believe the news said the 21-year old man, not a teen as you said earlier, was licensed to carry. So, I imagine he had a concealed carry permit.

I think most people that are serious about CC-ing have played a similar scenario to this out in their heads many times. I am fully aware of the risk I take in these types of situations and it would certainly play a role in how I react.
