If you're going to do engineering you might as well try for the engineering dorms instead of honors. You still get small classes and priority if they offer it in the classroom downstairs, but without the added work that honors requires

Okay... I'm an Honors alum (though it was a looooong time ago). I can help you.

Here's the deal. Do not do Honors classes in high school or college if you want some sort of "reward" for doing it. To be truthful, the non-educational rewards are few. Priority scheduling? Nice. Exclusive dorms? Nice. That's about it.

You don't get any other pats on the head for going Honors.

What you do get are more challenging and deeper classes, with more reading, more class discussion, and more access to your teachers. If that is what you are looking for, then the Honors College is for you. Several posters have advised that it's a no-go for engineers. I would tend to believe them. Honors classes are driven mostly toward the humanities, generally speaking.

If you intend to go to graduate school, Honors courses offer a nice little preview, though it's not exact. My experience with the LSU Honors College was (and still is) overwhelmingly positive. I would recommend it to students who want to go deeper than the usual undergraduate survey courses in history, English, and literature. You will also meet other students like you in the Honors College. Everyone finds their tribe at LSU. That's where you will find yours.

I did honors college my freshman year and stayed in West laville honors dorm. This was 2006. I was able to get priority scheduling. Outside of that, it was ultimately more work for virtually zero benefits. And it definitely never mattered when it came to looking for a job. I was in engineering..

Yeah, you're not the first person to tell me that. But admittedly, I do really like LSU.

Don't listen to this. It's undergrad and you seem smart: get your degree where it's affordable.

Honestly, unless we are talking Ivy League, it doesn’t make a damn bit of difference if you go to LSU or a “better” school like UT or UVA.

What matters, at least in the engineering field, is internships and work experience you got during the summer in college. Get real experience every single summer. This matters much more than the school and your GPA.

Do you have a life besides school? If not, then honors college is for you.

It’s worthless except for getting you a good dorm Freshman year and getting you priority scheduling your 1st 2 years

So, in other words, it's worth it.

Unlike what most here would believe, I actually do have a social life. A pretty good one, actually.

But regardless of that, I'm sure I wouldn't necessarily have to form a social circle with other Honors students.

My son is a Freshman in the Honors College and lives in East Laville. He's a Petroleum Engineering major with a full scholarship (with the exception of room and board). Joined a fraternity and is playing with the club baseball team. He's loving it at LSU although his roommate is a little weak.
So, if you are organized with your time, there is plenty to do.
He had a 35 ACT and a 4.35 GPA coming out of high school.

Pfffft. If you didn't stay in old school Kirby Smith you didn't truly see the bottom. Nothing like walking in the main door to a roommate dropping a deuce in the bathroom directly in front of you. No door/curtain for privacy, just a little half wall alcove.
