That’s a damn good idea.

My wife is on the phone with government officials right now trying to work out the specifics. I am about to have a nervous breakdown.
I suggested leaving the car there earlier when we were pre planning this and she thought it was a terrible idea. Its my father in law (now deceased)'s Audi. Not sure if it has sentimental value or what but it sounds like that's a total non starter for her. We also thought ab renting a van but it's not like they have a Hertz we can just drop it off at.
I almost feel like she wants to stay and is looking for an excuse to not make that flight. I know that's not the case but she is so torn about even leaving in the first place that any chance it may negatively impact someone here will keep her from going. It's the chinese collectivism mindset she was raised with.

I dont think that's the case as he will literally not step foot out of the car. It's more of just the strict travel restrictions they have in place and I'm sure it will be Chinese military guarding the toll booths. With an American in the car they may be more lenient and let us through to wuhan but he will be on his own on the way back.

First of all, take a deep breath. You got this.

Second, you need to take control. This isn’t about you, your wife, or her family. This is about your young children who you need to get to safety. I doubt these travel bans are getting lifted anytime soon. You could be there for months.
A car is a car. Someone can get it later or buy another one. Material possessions don’t matter in times like these.

If that’s true she isn’t thinking clearly. I shouldn’t tell you what to do from a thousand miles away but I can tell you what I would do in that situation.
If I could get reasonable assurance they would let me through roadblocks I would take that car and get my infant child to safety.
The security of that car would literally be last on my list of concerns
Take all names and numbers of people at the state department with you in case someone stops you and wants to speak with an official for confirmation

What about renting a van, and just dumping it in wuhan?
Seems like once you commit to leaving and make it to wuhan, there’s no turning back, so the goal is to get to the airport no matter what. Even if it means leaving a rental on the side of the road or in a parking lot.
Extreme maybe, and you may be banned from China forever if they link it to you, but it seems like a shithole anyway, and a permanent excuse to never have to go back.

She doesn’t want to leave her family in that situation. It’s an understandable response from her. But you need to take control and make a non emotional decision.
Get your family to safety. You can’t change the fate of her family even if you stay. The only outcome that can be changed right now is your family’s. They will understand that eventually when things return to normal.
Your infant needs his second round of immunizations at 16 weeks. I seriously doubt travel will be resumed in time for that and I don’t see y’all getting to the doctor there for immunizations. Use that as an excuse to your wife for why you need to get home.

WSJ Article on Evacuation Flight
Be safe dude, and thanks for the updates.
quote:
Rhode Island residents Patrick Randy Stockstill, his wife and two children had traveled to Yichang, a city of about four million near the Three Gorges Dam in Hubei province and 200 miles west of Wuhan, to celebrate Lunar New Year with the extended family of Mr. Stockstill’s wife.
Mr. Stockstill, who had arrived in Yichang on Jan. 20 and was set to leave this coming Friday, said his family was very worried about his youngest son, who is 3 months old. Public transportation in Yichang has been shut down since Friday.
“We’re not looking for special treatment,” said the 38-year-old loan officer, who hasn’t stepped outside for four days for fear of getting infected by the virus. “We are just looking for a way to get my boy home.”
Be safe dude, and thanks for the updates.

Honkus I don’t know you personally but I can promise you that your thoughts are clouded by emotion right now. I’m thinking for you without emotion and the correct decision is obvious.
GET YOUR FAMILY HOME
You have a private jet with 4 tickets waiting to take you to safety.
There are 1.4 billion people that would be on that jet if they could.

Yeah, no other option. If the cousin can't get back, just grab a car and ditch it. I'm sure people here would love to donate to a GoFundMe if needed.
Get home and protect your family.

Screw the car at this point. Maybe there is a place to park and pick it up much later? The focus is your child that ha san undeveloped immune system.

You'll have a lot of people on here that say you need to do whatever you can to get your family out of there. But the truth is you may be putting your family more at risk trying to leave. Only you can evaluate what you should/shouldn't do. We have very little information over here.

If it comes down to it, if I were him id at least drop my wife and kids off at the airport and stay back with the wife’s family if she’s so concerned about them.
But I’m not him, me personally, me, my wife and kids would all be on that plane at all costs. frick that Audi.

If they get on the road, there’s no garuntee they make it to the airport and on that plane. Big risk if they can’t get back to the family in China. Could be stuck in limbo with no where to stay.

Give the keys to a Chinese military personnel in Wuhan and tell him he will be rewarded handsomely if he returns the vehicle. A Honkus always pays his debts.
Or better yet, this was posted last page
If you could somehow make contact with these guys and have them pick up the car. Any close family of your wife in Wuhan?

There is a couple from BR that lives in Wuhan running a coffee shop named Mr Mai’s. Their names are David and Faith McNabb and they have lived there for many years. If he can reach out to them on Facebook, perhaps they can offer guidance. They posted today so they have access. A friend posted that each section of the city is closed off from the others so movement is limited. God Bless all of them and keep them safe.

That’s a good suggestion. Or if you can rent a car and get to the airport and if there’s no rental return leave it and report it stolen.
