I’m curious if OP is able to make any money off of all the news people wanting to talk to him? The guy could be out of work for awhile so I wouldn’t blame him at all for Capitalizing in his bad luck.

You really need to get perspective and take more control of your personal situation. I know you are busy "raising awareness" but the chance of you getting back to the US before the epidemic runs its course is about 10% and you need to take measures for you and your family to survive, starting yesterday. I know this sounds harsh, but it is reality. Always keep in mind - you have no rights in China, nor do the Chinese citizens. When I first visited China in 2004, the police still executed people publicly, on the street. Now, they do it behind the police station. Political dissidents go to camps where some have their organs harvested - all their organs. Chinese people and culture are great, but their government sucks.
A. Most likely, this virus escaped from the military bio lab in Wuhan. It appears to be more contagious than any virus in recorded history. It was probably not fully weaponized, or the death rate would be higher.
B. While they were reporting the numbers, the number of people said to be in critical condition was somewhere around 30% of the reported cases. The medical infrastructure in Wuhan is breaking down and that 30% critical will turn into 25% additional dead. No new medical supplies are getting shipped to Wuhan and the medical staff is on the verge of physical and mental breakdown. Estimates from the doctors in Wuhan are at least 100,000 infected and it will be twice that number later this week. You are not in Wuhan, but what happens there is sure to follow to where you are.
C. They are shooting at people that are trying to escape quarantine in Wuhan. You are asking to escape quarantine. This is the most critical thing you have ever been exposed to. It's time for you to put on your big boy pants and not bitch about someone getting credit for saving your arse.
D. China has rumors going around about the virus being started by the CIA as the Chinese government tries to shift blame from themselves. You may find yourself in a situation where you are physically attacked as conditions worsen and people want to punish someone for their situation. Chinese are generally great people, but they can also get pretty emotional and they can easily turn into mobs under the right conditions.
You HAVE to approach this in two ways, simultaneously - try to get out with your family (but DO NOT piss off anyone in China as you do it), AND make the best preparations possible to weather the situation there. I gave you some good recommendations on page 7 of this thread. You also need to have food, water, and heat for at least 30 days. I'm sure the people you are staying with have a hot pot stove - make sure it is not electric and buy a ton of fuel for it so you can cook rice and get a little heat from it. Get several bags of rice. Get soap for handwashing and make sure everyone you are living with washes their hands often. By the time someone exhibits symptoms, they have already had the virus for as long as 10 days. Also, get several bottles of alcohol and bleach to use as a disinfectant for wiping down shoes after someone goes out and cleaning if someone gets sick. Buy what you need now. Every day that goes by means less and less availability - of everything. Use the internet while you have it to study viruses and how they spread - and how to stop them from spreading. Teach those that will not be going with you so they can live too, even if you and your family get out.

I doubt they’ll charge rent where they’ll get quarantined. I wouldn’t be surprised if some mortgage banks and other creditors will work with people in unusual situations like this.
I wonder if there is a federal disaster relief benefit for citizens in these quarantine situations? So they don’t default creditors who can’t be flexible?

Well that’s one way to scare the frick out of someone. And make them never want to go to China, ever. Sounds like a bad gotdamn movie to me.

Is this thing worse than is being reported? I see they are building a hospital for 1000 beds in 10 days.

He needs to have the shite scared out of him. It's way more serious than most people know. I want him and his family to live. I don't give a shite if he likes me.

Here is how I know you accept the numbers released by the CCP, rather than what the doctors in Wuhan are saying.

I know that measles is the most contagious virus there is on the planet. A person with measles can leave a store and several hours later someone that showed up to that same store could get measles if they were not vaccinated because the virus is still in the air. THAT is a very contagious virus.
Anyone in the infection control knows this. Considering we don’t even know everything we need to know about this new strain of coronavirus...anyone making a claim that is the “most contagious virus ever” shouldn’t be taken seriously.

I had read it looks like this is less contagious than the flu. But nobody really knows anything

Estimates from the doctors in China put this virus at about 3.5 times more infectious than the Spanish flu of 1918. Maybe not the most infectious in history, but really serious. I am trying to get the guy to act so he and his family can be reasonably safe. Hygiene in China is pretty poor and is probably not helping things much. Public bathrooms do not have handsoap or towels. Since I don't speak much Mandarin, I spot public bathrooms in China by watching for people drying their hands by shaking them in the air in a certain way, note the direction they came from and then look for the water trail where 100 other people shook most of the water off of their hands. People still spit INSIDE of stores, on the floor.
