I assume you haven’t been to NYC before. Do you just want to see the sights or looking for an experience?
ETA: lived there for 12 years and still work there

We loved doing the double decker red bus thing that drives around NYC constantly and will drop you off at everything touristy. You can get off and get on at your leisure. Not sure if their operaring hours will work with your timeline but is recommend it if they do. Would be much cheaper than a car service.

Check out the diamond and gold districts. Bop over to China town and buy some knockoff crap for fun.
Snack at a Carnegie Deli. Check out what’s happening in the Guggenheim and the Museum of Natural History. You used to could buy some nice Audubon’s there. Ship some home for later framing.
After dark, do a carriage ride through Central
Park - maybe bring some mini-splits of champagne to sip.

I recommend The Lotte Palace. Right across the street from St Patrick Cathedral. Gossip Girl was filmed there as well.

Next time, schedule the trip better so you can have more time to show her Broadway... You jackass

Spend plenty of time giving her a little of the old in-out. Try to further impress her by winning some three card monte. Use any left over money to buy her a fake Rolex from a guy on the street.

I would not over-engineer the one day, You have less than 24 hours and have to plan on delays here and there.
I would have your driver take you to
9/11 memorial
Times Square for a picture
Maybe Rockefeller Center
Then go walk around Central Park some
After all that you are going to be around dinner time. There will be somewhere decent to eat at or near your hotel, do not be insist on going to some place miles away.
Relax and take it easy, marriage and life gets harder after the honeymoon.

I've considered is to hire a driver be contracted for 9 hours to take us around
Or you can take an Uber.

What better way to celebrate being newly married than to visit the site where thousands died in a terrorist attack 24 years ago.

Go eat at John's Pizzeria on Bleecker St in the village. Excellent pizza and a nostalgic old joint, lots of celeb pics on wall etc.

If he’s mentioning Times Square, I’m assuming he wants to get the full tourist NYC experience.
Times Square is best experienced after dark because of all the lights and screens.
The red double decker bus is a good idea to get the NYC experience.
The best views of NYC are from the water. There’s a speedboat called the beast, for a 30 minute thrill ride The Beast There are also various dinner cruises and half cruises and even ferries (like the Statue of Liberty ferry)
There is “off broadway” if you really would like to catch a show.
I wouldn’t hire a car. There is uber black and NYC is a walking town. It is hillier than most people know tho so wear comfortable shoes.
Also, depending what side of the park and weekday/weekend would help peoples share recommendations

Don’t try running all over the city. Walk through Central Park, sip drinks at the boat house, maybe add something cultural near by (Guggenheim, MET, or Museum of Natural History) if you like those things, cocktails at a nice bar or roof in the park area and a nice dinner. Relax, take it easy and enjoy the time together.

The Metropolitan Museum and/or the Natural History Museum. Both are on Central Park. One on the East and one on the West. I’d choose the Metropolitan if I had to choose one. Easy to walk around and look at the exhibits with everything from Old Masters to an Egyptian Temple. The Guggenheim museum is on the same East side as the Metropolitan. Walk down and see the Plaza. See the Famous Angel Statue in Central Park. It’s in just about every NYC movie. You can easily Uber or walk to these from any hotel overlooking Central Park.

We did a private tour. Was a bit pricey, but the tour guide drove us all over. Stopped at the main tourists sites. Brought us to John’s for lunch. Stayed in the car while we walked around. Took us through the park, etc.
Was a great way to hit the high points of the city in about 6 hours

We're limited on options of what we can do in NYC based on the timeline, the best suggestion I've considered is to hire a driver be contracted for 9 hours to take us around, see the sights we can, or drop us off and pick us up if we want to walk around anywhere, like in Times Square. I want to plan something cool for my future wife, she loves Broadway but we can't make the showtimes we looked into.
There are multiple double-decker bus services which do hop-on/hop-off service to multiple spots around the city and you can get a 24-hour pass for them. The tour guides on the busses are usually paid via tips so they are either really good or they don't last long (also, they will offer some el-cheapo earbuds but you can always use your own).
These bus services are probably the absolute best way to see as much of the city in the shortest amount of time possible.
Here's a few iconic things you might be able to squeeze into a single day using a double-decker bus line (the wife and I have ridden all of the Gray Line busses in NYC, highly recommend but I can't find their double-decker tours on their site any longer):
-Central Park
----It's pretty big so it can be an all-day visit if you lose time just walking around. The Lake (yes, that's the name) is probably the most iconic of the water features of the park. You're staying nearby so you can do this one sans bus.
-Statue of Liberty
----You can see it from a bus, but for the best angle you should take the Staten Island Ferry (it's free) to Staten Island and back. This is such a popular thing that all you really need to do to make this trek is just follow the crowd as it boards one ferry, then leaves at Staten Island to get on the return ferry.
-Empire State Building
----You can take the tour to go up to the top, but that can take a while depending on crowds. If you're an LSU fan, the NYC LSU pub/bar (Legends) is right across the street behind the ESB.
-Times Square
----It's one of the most iconic places. If you get hungry, I recommend the iconic eatery of Junior's. There is a location right off Broadway (West 45th) and the cheesecake is stupidly good. It's a mass-dining kind of place, so if you want something a little fancier, Carmine's is just a block over.
This is a fairly common route for all the double-decker busses. If you do one of these and don't really have any specific sites you want to get off the bus at, I would recommend riding the full route first to get an idea of what places you want to get off on for the next go-round (full route is about 90 minutes).

My wife and I (married going on 30 years) often laugh about how we wasted a perfectly good vacation on our honeymoon. We went on a cruise. There was all sorts of entertainment on the boat, shopping, and shore excursions at the ports of calls. But we missed almost all of it because we spent 95% of the cruise on our cabin doing what it is newlyweds do.
I do remember we’d go to the dinner most nights though. They seated us with two other young newlywed couples. There was this one couple where it was apparent the husband was in full-blown vacation mode. All he talked about was them going to this activity, some show, and the various shore excursions. And he’d always ask us and the other couple “hey, did y’all go to _____”, and we’d always say the same thing, “no, we missed that. We were in our cabin”. What was funny was he was oblivious to the look on his new bride’s face during these conversations. You could tell she was thinking “of course they didn’t go do that, THEY’RE ON THEIR HONEYMOON YOU IDIOT!” I remember one night she was pissed at him because he’d lost his wedding ring while on a snorkel excursion.
To this day, from time time time, Mrs. Vader and I will wonder how things worked out for that couple after the honeymoon.
