How much money does the zoo bring in every year? Anytime I've ever been, it's empty. A lot of the exhibits are vacant.

Today, SWB said moving the zoo would be "detrimental" to NBR. Really? THAT'S what would we'd consider the nail in the coffin for NBR? Not the crime? It's moving a zoo that nobody goes to?

I'm not even saying move it to SBR like people are pushing. Honestly, it seems like the best idea would be to shut it down and move on.

I just think it's funny that SWB thinks this is what would kill NBR.

Couldn't this have gone in any one of the many current zoo threads?

Moving the Zoo is not going to kill NBR.

Anytime an issue comes up regarding Broom's main base, she has to defend it. This time it's the Zoo...Next time it'll be something else and if it has to do with her beloved NBR base, she's going to go bat for them....

You can take the hood out the zoo but you can't take the zoo out the hood.

I’m pretty sure the murder and blight is more detriment to NBR

The real question is how much money does the zoo bring into NBR? It's not like people travel in from other areas of the state or country and stay in hotels in NBR so they can go to the zoo. I really don't see them going to the restaurants and shops surrounding the zoo while they're in the neighborhood (Unless they want some CD's). Hell, I don't even think most of the zoo patrons even stop at the nearby gas stations on their way to and from the zoo.

Let's just say that the zoo intake is the same regardless of the location. That money goes to BREC or at best the parish. It doesn't get distributed strictly to the area around the zoo. The argument "they" make for keeping it is childish.

I think it'd be groundbreaking if they got some jailbirds to dress up as animals in the exhibits and maybe have them fight and whatnot

Turn the zoo into a prison. Save money on gas due to the shorter drive to the prison after arrest. Problem solved

She does have an argument. I bet there are a number of people that travel to NBR once or twice a year solely to visit the zoo. However, they don’t stop to get gas, shop, or eat with their family in the car.

People like SWB want their slice of the pie. They don’t believe in growing or expanding that pie. They have no idea how to create or build anything. They have been leeches their entire lives, and only know how to bleed cities and neighborhoods dry until there is nothing left.

It's not how much money the zoo brings to north Baton Rouge, what's important is how many people with money does the zoo bring in. Especially ones that are easy to mug. Crime is one of the largest industries in nbr

I was talking about this with a friend a few weeks ago. Does anyone visit any of the other businesses in Baker or NBR after the zoo? There is nothing near it.

Does BR need its own zoo? I'd rather have the tax savings.
Let it wallow...to death.

I NEVER stop in Baker/NBR. When I have to drive thru it, I make certain I have enough gas to make it thru and far beyond. Short of an emergency, I have no other reason to get off the road there. I've been to the zoo there about 7-8 times. The last 2 or 3 have been for the Brew at the Zoo event. I stopped going mainly due to the location.

The main reason I don’t go is the location and the lack of quality exhibits. Exxon gave them money for a tiger exhibit and the rest of the place sucks. No elephants. No real bears. No lions. No gorillas. It’s a petting zoo with tigers and a few giraffes. If it was moved to a better location they would still need to improve the exhibits to make it better. Great cities have great zoos. You can tell a lot about a place by its zoo. Ours is very telling right now.

Not if they value their life and property.

I don't care if you relocate the San Diego zoo and all of flora and fauna of Africa to BR, this fricking shite hole will never be a "great" city.

And I'm not just hating on this place. The state govt is so fricking corrupt and antiquated that no place in La. has a shot at evolving into a "great" city until we have an absolute cultural shift from the status quo to something better at the state level.

and I don't ever see that happening. So you can build all the epic zoos you want. It won't matter.
