I mean there's threads and stories all the time that say otherwise.

I gotcha. I agree. It's pretty unreal its even a thing

The law should be that squatters have no rights and will be arrested for trespass and evicted unless they have a good faith basis for being there based upon a writing from the owner.

Florida is changing theirs.
Looks like Georgia is also working on improving their squatter laws.
quote:
House Bill 621 authorizes property owners to request action by the sheriff's office to immediately remove squatters from your home. The bill passed overwhelmingly in the Florida senate last week. Before this bill is signed into law, squatters are considered tenants in the eyes of the law. Now, squatters will soon face criminal charges for violating what was once within their rights. Senator Keith Perry led the charge on HB621, which allows property owners to file an affidavit showing the property doesn't belong to those who are occupying it. The bill creates stiff penalties for violators, like a 2nd degree felony for damage to a home and a 1st degree felony for fraudulently selling or leasing the property. The sheriff is required to serve the notice and remove unwanted occupants without delay

Just a couple of things I can't wrap my brain around why these are allowed to be "valid" laws in 2024.

lol @ you thinking this is just a blue state thing
Squatting is not a blue state issue only. It happens all over.
The craziness of not allowing the police to remove and/or arrest the people that day is mostly a blue state issue. The legal hurdles you have to go through are more cumbersome in blue states too. In TX, LA, MS, etc we can have them out the same day. In NY the cops won't touch it. Same in NJ, PA, CT, etc.
Again, I deal with it in a lot of states and it is way harder in liberal states. That's a fact. None of them are as extreme as Cali.

geez. just shoot them and go bury the bodies. No one would know they were missing anyway.
But they might get the Saint George Floyd treatment if you did that

Good explanation but pretty silly for 2024. Maybe the English should keep Prima Nocta going.

It’s insane that you can be charged for unlawful eviction when these bums break in.
Posted on 3/19/24 at 12:24 pm to stout
Stupid liberals and leftists have created this situation when such things could all be settled in short order with the squatters arrested for breaking and entering.

Even if we assume or concede all the nonsensical parts of this and that squatter has rights, that squatter still factually had to unlawfully enter your home, so even if you go through all of the shite that comes with them having rights and/or you trying to get them evicted, they should always be arrested for some type of unlawful entry/breaking & entering type law. They couldn't get to where they are without breaking that law.

Someone please explain to me (a rational explanation) how this is a thing. How is it not trespassing? Help me understand so I won’t think I’m losing my mind.
DEMOCRATS
The head of the snake has allowed 8+million squatters into your backyard. shite rolls downhill.
Trespassing?
More like breaking & entering/illegal entry, they didn’t magically portal into any of these private properties.
You’re not losing your mind, but you are losing your country right in front of your eyes.

They produce a fake lease. That is the issue. It then has to go to court to prove the lease is fake. That takes time in a shithole like NY.
Thankfully in LA you can get a hearing within a week or two depending on when you file, Also, in LA you can evict for any reason stating you just want the property back if there is no lease or the lease has run out. After the court date, you can have the sheriff on site within a week or so. At most you can have someone out just under 30 days in LA if the cops say it's a civil matter and refuse to remove the squatter. I dealt with it in a vancat rental of mine about 3 months ago. It's also fairly cheap.
In CA or NY you will be lucky to even get a hearing in less than 60 days and not at a huge financial cost.

It's worse than that. You can get charged if you shut off the utilities in your name to force them to leave. So in some states the owners get stuck paying the bills for months while the legal process plays out.

NYC has thousands of new professional squatters to put those laws to the test.

GOP needs to pay some people to squat AOC's place and see what happens.
Posted on 3/19/24 at 12:34 pm to TigerCoon
Squatters are like bugs, and should be squashed for the same reason.

will NEVER understand the concept of "squatter's rights".
Why do these blue states allow this?
"Hey if you vote me into office I will help pass laws that have zero effect on me but will let you live in someone else's home for virtually free"
What's so hard to understand here? It's a business transaction.
