Home warranties for major appliances

Anybody have one? Are they worth it? How do they work (what’s covered/can be covered, how do they come up with the premium)? Are TVs and things like it covered?
My house is just getting to the age where everything is starting to give me problems. Microwave just went out, AC unit has bonked out before. Nothing big...YET.
My neighbor had one and his outside unit went out. Had it replaced and didn’t come out of pocket at all.
I’m about to research it as soon as I hit submit, but I figured I’d come to the Mecca of knowledge first

If you need insurance for a TV you're in bad shape financially.

If you think your fridge or AC unit is about to kick the bucket then get it if not don't

I’ve only dealt with warranties once and it was for my furnace. The warranty covered the part 100% but did not cover the labor.

Didn’t think so either. Really just care about the AC unit. It’s 12 years old, undersized for my house and couldn’t keep up in the summer cause the whole west side was nothing but shite made windows. so it’s been taxed. Replace the windows and haven’t had a problem since. Well, except singing the relief windows jingle in my head for the next 6 months

Just bought a home and was given a home warranty at closing.
They are worthless, AC unit went out. Due to age the max payout was 1125.
Like most insurances they cover what never fails and have exclusions and limits for stuff that does

My coworker had her oven go out recently and called her home warranty company. Took them about 4 weeks for them to actually fix it.
I’d rather just save the $500-600 a year on home warranty and pay for shite out of pocket when the water heater or appliances go out instead of having to deal with the hassle of making home warranty claims for all that and having to wait around for them to get to me.

THAT was the million dollar question I was looking for answers to. Thanks

That’s what I’m thinking now too. I figured it wouldn’t be worth it since I know no one that has it lol.

Home warranties are worthless
I did get a 5 year extended warranty on my fridge through Lowes. Was $79 extra on a $2000 fridge
Compressor died 3 year in, they covered partd and labor, i paid nothing, saved me $500.

I had one for about a year for free when I bought my house. Every callout was about $75. They did not cover smaller appliances and did not cover stopped up drains. If you are looking for convenience, it is pretty good because they have a lot of stroke with repair services.
The negatives that I saw were that repair men seemed to patch things instead of fixing them right (i.e. filling A/C with Freon instead of repairing the leak).
Looking back on the year, I didn't see it worth a few hundred bucks per year and $75 per visit and ultimately canceled the policy when it expired.
Not a bad deal, but it is really situational as to whether it is the thing for you.

The seller of our house provided one as part of the sale.
The house was 20 at the time and had the original HVAC and water heaters so I extended for the next 2 years. In that time both HVAC systems crapped out as well as both water heaters.
Had the A/C’s repaired under warranty a couple times for the $75 service fee.
Once the items needed full replacement they would pay for parts and labor but there was always some BS charges to bring the systems “up to code”. When this happened I just had them cut me a check and buy me out of the equipment. I think I got 2k for each A/C and $150 for each water heater.
I used the “buy out” money to help offset the cost of the replacements. I then canceled the warranty b/c I don’t need it for kitchen appliances.

Well, the other thing I didn’t think about either is that we get just about every appliance a house needs at cost because my MIL is a GM at a furniture store. Which also gets the repairman here pretty quick when something goes wrong.
I think the whole reason for me asking is cause I’m fearing the day that AC unit goes out and I’ll have to fork out $5k for a new one. Cause pretty much anything else is $500 or so. Nothing big

Makes sense. I’m also just spooked right now cause I’ve had a run of shite going caput. 2 TVs, my stereo receiver and the microwave. Waiting for something big to happen. Lol

Sounds like you had a lightning strike near your house.

Personally I wouldn’t do home warranty. They send out the cheapest repair companies they can - which coincidentally have horrible online reviews. An appliance company they sent out caused $17k in damage to our wood floors by misdiagnosis of issue with our freezer, faulty valve and they just replaced ice maker.
We will get a new refrigerator bc it’s covered by warranty, however the headache of replacement floors isn’t really worth it.

This was my situation as well...Unfortunately, until the thing completely craps our, they will just patch it to keep it functional. After a few tries to get it fixed correctly, I just decided it was not the thing for me.
ETA: if it will give you some peace of mind, try it out for a year and then reevaluate at the end of that year....
