Home Security System Questions

Which company do you use for home monitoring?
My Vivint contract is about expire and I want to switch because I’m paying too much — $70 per month.
How much do y’all pay?
Is it worth it just to buy my own security cameras and pay someone local to do the monitoring?
Based on the odds of actually needing it, is it even worth it to home a security system?

If you live in BR or NOLA, pay whatever it takes.

I use ADT and I think it’s about 40 a month. I don’t run my cameras through them. I have a stand alone DVR for that.

None, I choose to not live in an area where I need it.

I have not been a fan of Vivint. I had a problem and the tech was not helpful. On top of being one of the highest in the industry. Also, not getting locked into another 5 year contract.

ADT just went up to $50/month for me and all I have is monitoring, no cameras. About to switch to someone else in the coming weeks.

Custom Security with cellular device for their notification <$30/month.
ETA: Longterm customer. New customers maybe more.

SimpliSafe is one of the best. You can design and install your own system and have it monitored for $24.99 per month. Their customer service and response time are awesome.

What does a live monitoring service really do (serious question)? In the cities I have lived in, the cops take quite a while to respond to these type of incidents so what’s the point if the cops don’t show up in time to do anything?
I would run my own motion detectors and cameras and run it on something like Homeassistant and setup motion alerts to be sent to my phone. Accomplishes the same thing but with no monthly cost. However, I do think some homeowners insurance offer incentives for having a monitoring system in place with the alarm, maybe?

My homeowners discount for monitored alarm system used to equal the monitoring fee.
I’ve switched and am not sure. Need to check.

I have LA Alarms who installed ours. It's Alert360 system. Two cameras and alarm. But it Sucks donkey dicks for $56 a month. Two sensors have gone bad in 3 years and it's not free/covered under contract. And the camera alerts are slow as frick, sometimes taking 45 minutes to alert me to someone ringing door bell or walking up driveway.
My contract is almost up and I'm not renewing it.
I'd go stand alone cameras and local company for alarm system.

By that logic, what's the point of having any system? It would still take you time to respond and get back to your house. And that is assuming you are in a position to look at your phone as soon as the alarm is tripped.
I have simplisafe, and like them. Run this thread over to the Tech Board and you will get a few other suggestions to look into. I have seen Abode, Ring, and another one where you buy the hardware you want, install yourself, and pay a nominal fee to have monitoring.

Alarm systems can certainly be a deterrent in that someone may not try and break in if they see the system or they cause a siren to go off and flee the scene quickly.
I am honestly asking what an actually live monitoring service provides? I just don’t see the benefit.
I suppose in a really bad case of a home invasion it would be very nice to have so maybe it’s worth it, I don’t know.
Edit: Crap I wasn’t even considering a fire emergency situation. So I am changing my stance to pro monitoring service

This. They even gave me a courtesy call Thursday to tell me my power was out. They’ve been very dependable and amenable for the last 22 years I’ve been with them.
