Just bought my first home and getting insurance quotes. Is there a general list of insurance companies to get quotes from? Or better yet a list of don’t waste my time with companies?
Already getting a quote from Alfa due to my auto already with them and few local guys.

State Farm auto & home is hard to beat if you’re in Louisiana.
Farm Bureau is another one but I have no experience with home insurance from them.

I have Liberty Mutual...the only thing I can say about them is they are way less expensive than Allstate

State farm isn't writing new homes. Why don't you just call and independent agent and have him do all the shopping for you?
ETA: pricing will vary from person to person. If you have a pristine driving history, then state farm is nearly impossible to beat; however if you've been in an accident then State Farm is not even going to be close.
All the big players like Progressive, Geico, Safeco, AllState, SF, and the like are ones to look at

Farm Bureau has been great for me. Competitive rates and easy deals with claims...plus they won't drop you like state farm for too many claims

Hard to beat for highest prices maybe. Are they even writing home policies in south La right now?

Bull. shite.
They replaced a roof for about $20k. They paid out about $150k when a pipe burst and flooded my house.
Then they dropped my arse.
I will say this about Farm Bureau: I couldn't have been happier with their product and service. They did not bat an eye and never tried to lowball me or refuse to pay. They stroked the checks with no problem and didn't hassle me or give me a hard time when more damages were uncovered and they needed to add supplementals to the original claim. If I ever need to get new property insurance again, I'm going straight to them to give them the first shot at my business; I was that impressed by how they handled their end of the deal during a very hard time when I was homeless for 5 months.
However, they absolutely cut bait when the time came.

Nothing for nothing but I would drop your arse too after $170k in claims. Just sayin'.

Oh, I'm not throwing stones at them for dropping the policy at all. I would not renew that policy at the end of the term, either. Just pointing out that if you have to use the insurance and I mean REALLY use it, you're going to get dropped, no matter who the carrier is.

i feel like mine is pretty average priced but i dont stalk home insurers everyday so i have no clue if theyre still writing policies or not.

Find an Insurance Broker that works in your area. Give them the specs and have them get you a couple of quotes. Google companies for reviews, and move forward.
I have moved 3 businesses, and my personal this at, and every time they cut my bill by about 20%. They have access to a lot more companies than you would even think about using. They can help you figure out what coverages you need and what you don't.

Yeah, if you have multiple claims in a span of a few years, then your either going to get dropped, or the carrier you're with will price themselves out of the game. That's just how the insurance business works.
The claims don't even have to be that severe in terms of cost. If you have multiple in a short span, the carrier assumes that a big one is right around the corner

My FIL is an agent for State Farm and is would be the first to tell you their prices aren't competitive at all. Their auto rates for me were over double the cost of Allstate for example. And I'mover 30, married, no tickets or accidents or any claims. They used to provide premium service so the prices were justified, but those days are gone.

I know I've made A lot of car claims and they never dropped me. But state farm dropped my sister after 3 claims. Also FB was super quick and easy on the two home claims I filed. And ...i'm still with them.

Call an independent non-captive broker in your town and ask to run as many quotes as they can. Choose the best after discussing with them. They have every incentive to help you the best they can.
