I was laughed at on this board when I said I was saving to have 150k per kid when they graduate high school for college. That was about 10 years ago

You got laughed at because you’re a lying alcoholic

pretty much, yeah
you're simply not making the same connections and having the same experiences at delgado as a freshman/sophomore compared to lsu
same goes for lsu vs vandy or rhodes

Have to live in a dorm at 18 to do that? Can only meet people in life as a freshman on a 4 year university campus?
Agree, I don’t get the whole networking comment etc. You’re still on campus by 19 or 20, will meet people actually in your major, still have access to internships, can join frats/sororities….

It’s possible, but those students are going to be undeniably behind

And this will likely never change. Higher education is a huge money-making machine now. They don't want the tap turned off.
I've argued for what you've said with others along with vetting prospective students based on high school performance and SAT/ACT scores along with showing satisfactory academic progress (3.0 minimum GPA) to continue to receive loans while finishing within 5 years (that's generous). Getting and keeping student loans should be akin to qualifying for a mortgage or business loan. This notion has been called racist and elitist by those I've argued with. They want basically a blank check from the fed for everyone to just go to college for whatever. Brilliant.
I have people tell me I was an idiot and a racist for suggesting that the school and the student both should be held accountable for student loans. The school should not be allowed to access loans if they do not have some form of academic standard and have the type of graduation rates and career placement that far too many schools have and some people are simply not smart enough or capable of benefitting from an education beyond high school. Saddling them with a massive debt when they have no chance of earning a degree is a double-edged sword...they now have massive debt, which they ain't going to pay, and therefore have worse credit and still have no education. I am all for paying for education for those who can benefit from it, can't afford it and are in a field where they will earn a living when done....it is a cheap investment. What anyone with a brain should have a problem with is schools actively recruiting people they know damn well ain't qualified so the school can get a couple of semesters of tuition out of the taxpayer.

2) community college transfers aren't getting into any decent frats or srats
and mingo is right, you're absolutely going to be behind on getting a competitive internship if you're transferring in as a junior lol. if you just want to be a teacher or something like that, it makes sense.

This shouldn't happen because you can't repo a diploma.
This is precisely why it SHOULD happen. Colleges need to be held accountable for offering garbage degree programs they know won't help their customers gain employment.
Also, removing the government guarantee will do nothing if college loans aren't dischargeable in bankruptcy.

I don't disagree, but at least teaching degrees result in actual gainful employment most of the time.
The problem there is the existence of "teaching degrees." These people would have great difficulty gaining employment if professionals with actual knowledge of the subject matter were not required to go back to school to obtain a "teaching degree" before being allowed to teach in a classroom.

teaching degrees
I’m talking about art history majors that go back through alternative certification because their job at the art museum pays minimum wage with no benefits.
Then they teach your 4th grader.
It’s all part of the game for colleges to earn more money. That’s why they keep the liberal and fine arts degrees.

I don't really have a problem with this, other than it being stupid that this person got an art history degree to start with. I do not believe someone with an art history degree should need a "teaching certificate" to teach art though. That is a scam.

Roughly 80% of undergrads at LSU aren’t part of Greek life. 80% are just wasting their time going to school if they don’t go Greek

It’s $43k outstate now… at Alabama.
Bama is giving a lot of full ride scholarships to out of state kids though. I know of a few people with kids who got everything paid and more.

I keep hearing this, that Bama and some others around the south are offering out of state kids much better deals in some cases than they can get in their home state.
Posted on 4/16/25 at 5:07 pm to Jon A thon
Yeah but it’s like the Kohls approach where they mark things up so they discount it 40% and make people think they got a deal.
