Maybe I just missed it but was there ever an answer for the US seal that was a gift from the Russians a few pages back?

Is that the small mortar used by the Japs? I believe that would just slap them on their knee or right on the ground to fire one off.

correct
The Soviets fielded similar concept (actually twin concepts) in 14.5mm.
The PTRS-41 (by Simonov) and PTRD-41 by Degtaryov - both borrowed heavily from the Polish model 35, anti-tank rifle.
At least one of the Soviet models was reported in use as recently as this year in the Ukraine.
Simonov
Degtyaryov
We found a weapons cache in Kosovo in 2003 that had ammo for one of these rifles - old Serbian stock.

That was it's name given by Marines & GI's but it was not a real mortar. It was actually a grenade launcher.

We actually discussed him a few pages ago. He's the Finnish sniper that was known as "white Death" during the Winter War.

Was only a flesh wound. He went on to kill many more.

He lost half his jaw. He did not recover until the end of fighting so the wound basically ended the war for him. He did go on to live into old age though.

sorry about that.
Soviet children presented a carved great seal.
It was hung up in an office. Many years later it was found to contain a bug.
quote:
Think your neighbor is going a little Walter White on you? Before you call the DEA, try gifting him with a bugged Great Seal of the United States. In 1945, the Young Pioneer organization of the Soviet Union presented U.S. Ambassador Averell Harriman with a Great Seal, hand-carved from wood, as a gesture of friendship. Their definition of friendship was a little dysfunctional, though, because the gift contained a bug designed by famous Russian inventor Leon Theremin. The bug was hard to detect because it was extremely thin, gave off no signal and had no power supply (this was amazing technology back in 1945, mind you). Harriman hung it in his office at the Ambassador’s House, where the "Thing," as it was later called, went undiscovered until 1952 — three ambassadors later.

I read that marines who captured it and tried to use it from their knee suffered injuries.
