Here's a hint: He died before WWII started.

I'll guess it is the Emperor before Hirohito.
Emperor Taisho (had to look up the name).

No
That is Japanese Admiral Togo. He commanded the Japanese fleet during the Russo-Japanese War. He soundly defeated the Russian Fleet and established Japan as a naval power. He's known as the "Nelson of the East".

Name the pictured army heading for the front lines. Which country is being liberated from enemy occupation?

The amount of fog and haze makes me think that's a picture of the 8th Infantry Div retaking the Aleutians.
Second pic, I have no idea.

Ok
Who is he?
What is he famous for?
Who was his famous companion in arms?

Correct.
The Aleutian Islands Campaign was a struggle over the Aleutian Islands, part of the Alaska Territory, in the Pacific campaign of World War II starting on 3 June 1942. A small Japanese force occupied the islands of Attu and Kiska.
Therefore, the country being liberated was the US.

Same campaign. I don't know that name of that soldier, but he made some of the worst fashion choices in history.

GILLES DE RAIS-
This soldier fought along side Joan of Arc and served as the equivalent of Frances military chief of staff, and was one of the wealthiest men in France. History tells us that Gilles hid a dark and sinister side for many years, during which he kidnapped, tortured and murdered hundreds of peasant children (mostly young boys) while working with alchemists who used black magic in their attempts to turn base metal into gold.

I recognize that picture from my French History class. Someone who has to do with Joan of Arc?
Posted on 7/10/14 at 10:33 am to Bluefin
Yes.
But not what he was famous for
quote:
Gilles de Rais was a celebrated Breton knight who fought in the French army alongside none other than Joan of Arc. However, it is not de Rais' prowess as a soldier for which he is best remembered

The third part was the give away.
1. His name was de Ryeas (or something like that, I'm horrid at trying to spell French names)
2. He was high up in the French Army during the Hundred Years War and was rumored to be a child serial killer
3. Joan of Arc

THAT's why his portrait stands out. I remember that.
