I know that Germany used merchant ships in the war effort. That one appears to have a swastika on the side.
I guess this is a WWI German Merchant Raider?
She is German. But she was not around for WWI. In fact she her hull was laid down almost 20 years after WWI ended. And she was never a Merchant Raider. The only war related activities she did was act as a hospital ship and evacuate Germans from the advancing Soviets.
I'll give it another minute or two in case Ace is lurking and wants to take a stab at it.

I used Google, but I'm pretty sure that I have the answer now.
Paging Ace....
ETA: The historical significance on this one was very good.

OK The ship in the picture is the German liner MV Wilhelm Gustloff. As to why she is a historic ship.....
LINK
To give some context to the scale of the loss of life, 1,517 people perished when the RMS Titanic went down.
quote:
The MV Wilhelm Gustloff was a German ship which was sunk on 30 January 1945 by a Soviet submarine in the Baltic Sea while evacuating German civilians, officials and military personnel from Gdynia (Gotenhafen), occupied Poland, as the Red Army advanced. By one estimate 9,400 people died, which would make it the largest loss of life in a single ship sinking in history.

I also found this interesting about the Wilhelm Gustloff:
Never, never, and I mean EVER, change a boat's name. Very bad luck.
quote:
The ship was originally intended to be named Adolf Hitler but was named after Wilhelm Gustloff, a leader of the National Socialist Party's Swiss branch, who had been assassinated in 1936. Hitler decided on the name change after sitting next to Gustloff’s widow during his memorial service.
Never, never, and I mean EVER, change a boat's name. Very bad luck.

Further proof that Hitler was clueless about all things to do with maritime affairs.
Alright, lets shake things up a tad. We're going old school...
1. Name that battle
2. Who lost?
Hint: This was the largest battle ever fought in Europe until WWI.

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner.
It was his first major loss. He was faced by coalition of Russian, Austrian, Prussian, Swede & And other minor German States. In the aftermath of the battle the collation army invaded France, occupied Paris, and forced Napoleon into his first exile.
History remembers Waterloo but really Leipzig was the bigger, indeed the biggest, battle of the time.

Well I tried to find a picture of him where he's a bit younger and not in uniform. Go ahead and answer it.

Is that Bismarck? First German Chancellor?
Posted on 7/10/14 at 10:02 am to unbeWEAVEable
I'll bet that one would have stumped everyone.
(For those who don't know, that's Otto von Bismarck. He was instrumental in the establishment of a unified German Empire and served as it's first chancellor. He's widely regarded as one of the best statesmen of the 19th century and really all time)
Alright, here's one that's a bit more difficult...
