If it flies, f*cks, or floats it's cheaper to rent it.

Golden rule.

I'm the president of the HOA. He keeps it in his garage and rolls it out every once in a while and starts it. I go over and talk to him while he's doing that. It's quite the attraction.

they can be had for a pretty reasonable price unless you're wanting something pretty close to brand new, as someone mentioned, the purchase price is the most reasonable part, maintaining and operating it is where it can get pricey, however a 172 is about as cheap to maintain and operate as it gets

If anyone on this board is actually serious about aircraft ownership they should contact this gentlemen at:

www.aviationtaxconsulting.com

He's an LSU guy and will set you up right. There is a lot of incorrect and misinformed 'hangar talk' when it comes to buying, owning and operating.

If he can get the rust bucket Millennium Falcon to fly, he can easily handle private aircraft

f you are serious about flight training you can save more money by just buying one and paying an instructor directly rather than having to pay for an aircraft per hour.

As good as this sounds, it can't be true no matter what math you use to make it check out. My son is getting his Aviation Degree at LA Tech. Flight time is killing me but I don't think buying a plane is the answer. I am just waiting for him to graduate so Uncle Sam can pick up his flight time.

on the civilian side this is probably the most practical/economic way

As already mentioned a few times in this thread about if it flies, floats, or fricks.

Luckily, I have a guy I went to school with that runs skydiving trips out of Shreveport. He gets pilots out of LA Tech so hopefully soon my son can get his flight time built up doing that. I am not buying a plane.

in this case it would be considered an education expense, and the good thing about old 172s is that you would probably be able to sell it for as much or more than you paid for it when you're done with it

$100/hr is the real cost. Includes fuel, engine reserve, etc.
