You can definitely make an educated guess on diameter. Tree guys do it constantly. Once you’ve seen a million trees over a long period of time, you start getting a feel for it. Hard to be very accurate without some serious tools tho.

52.86”

Bingo lol

I got 339 years based on aging structure in op.

the only accurate way to figure out age is counting the rings after you cut it down
that diameter thing formula is total BS, tree size changes with soil conditions and water source a lot more then age

That is the only true way.
I had an oak that was a wide as a small swimming pool. I had one branch from the middle fall onto my house for Ida. So you can’t go by diameter only if there are multiple shoots that start growing.
The tree was only 30 years old as since it was planted in 1990. Now I just have a pile of saw dust and bits where it once stood. I continued the job that the storm started and a stump grinder ended the rest of the mighty oak.

I find it hard to believe you had a live oak as wide as a small swimming pool that was only 30 years old. Even those kiddie pools are big enough where a live oak trunk that wide, 4.5’ off the ground, would be at least 100 years old. At least.

Here is a photo of the trunk before the storm.

Harvey Updyke knows a thing or two about oak trees.
Give him a call.

We have one that’s about 40 years old that’s bigger than that.
My neighbor had a big oak hit by lightning and cut it down. I will say it was about 3.5-4 ft across at the cut. I remember counting 85-90 yrs on the rings.

That’s three trees.

n wet climates or years the tree will grow more (more space between the rings) and in dry climates or drought years it will grow less, etc.
That’s what I was thinking. A tree grows faster in some climates than others. Size can’t be very accurate for aging.

My uncle planted oak trees along Hwy 73 when he was in school so that’s maybe 80 years ago. They are way bigger than 10”., closer to 30 and maybe bigger than that.
The one behind my parents house is a monstrosity, 2 people aren’t touching fingers around it. My old man said he could touch around it when he bought it in the 50s. The one in the front yard was planted when I was kid, maybe 50 years and it’s at least 24” across the middle, probably more. I’ll have to pass a tape on them next time I do up

Tree growth is heavily influenced by how much water it gets. In West TX a live oak grows much slower than in south LA.

How does one about seeing the rings w/o severly injuring the tree?

You just have to use a really small saw, that way the cut isn’t as wide.

Use a increment borer and you don’t have to cut it down.
Pulls a core out and then you count the rings
