This is a disingenuous counterpoint. There are way less activities available before the standard workday begins than there are after it ends.

Untrue. I imagine that the limitations you speak of only exist because of a business being open or closed before vs after work. However, There is no physical reasons that one couldn't do said activity before work vs after work. If there is demand for an activity, the market will adjust.

For the summer activities that I personally enjoy, cycling, fishing hiking, etc, there are no limitations of early vs late.

The big push is to remain on DST year round. Why?

The reason is people would have to get up an hour earlier than they already do to take advantage of the morning daylight. I also find all these "dead of winter" arguments amusing. In some parts of the nation that's certainly a concern, but this board skews heavily towards the south where winter isn't as deadening.

I would imagine so many disliking the current system for different reasons says it's a good compromise. Maybe they should do the time change on a Saturday instead of a Sunday to give more people time to recover from the lost sleep.

I'm 100% in favor of daylight in the early hours, but let's be genuine.

Who in their right mind can manage to fish before work and find it relaxing?

We should stay on standard time because standard time is actually true. At "noon" on daylight savings, the sun isn't actually at noon. It's an hour away from noon.

Define "true". In the northern hemisphere, the sun is never "truly" overhead, and even less so in the winter. It also sets farther from "true" west in the winter months.

It is not like DST is fricking with the earths rotation. All that matters is, when it gets warmer in the United States, DST gives us more time to be outdoors at the end of our workday.

Oh FFS you pussy. Its one hour. Some of you are so ridiculously soft I'm surprised you made it to whatever your age is.

Sleep an hour later on Sunday morning or go to bed an hour earlier Sunday night.

Not in December or January if DST is all year round.

Your not, but everyone says we are.

I'd rather have more "PM" daylight in the fall/winter than the spring/summer because it's cooler.

I understand that you want it to be that simple, but it isn't. The time change affects people.

Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine

quote:

An abundance of accumulated evidence indicates that the acute transition from standard time to daylight saving time incurs significant public health and safety risks, including increased risk of adverse cardiovascular events, mood disorders, and motor vehicle crashes. Although chronic effects of remaining in daylight saving time year-round have not been well studied, daylight saving time is less aligned with human circadian biology—which, due to the impacts of the delayed natural light/dark cycle on human activity, could result in circadian misalignment, which has been associated in some studies with increased cardiovascular disease risk, metabolic syndrome and other health risks. It is, therefore, the position of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine that these seasonal time changes should be abolished in favor of a fixed, national, year-round standard time.

I have no problem with it. I actually prefer it because of the extra daylight I have to get stuff done in the yard when I get home in the evenings. However, starting DST in early March and keeping until early November is messed up. Why not have it coincide with the first Sunday after Vernal Equinox, and end on the first Sunday after Autumnal Equinox? It'd work out so much better that way without feeling completely artificial.

And we NEED DST to end in the autumn! The pre-game in Death Valley on a Saturday night when the sun has already set on the western horizon is an experience to be savored and enjoyed as frequently each year as is possible!

Yes. But per your avatar and vitals you live in a galaxy far, far away. I live near Atlanta and drive to my office nearly on the border with Alabamastan every day. That western portion of the eastern time zone was pitch black dark this morning until well after 7:00 AM!

FIFY.

I'm up before the sun everyday. Without using an alarm clock. Most mornings I'm up between 4-5 AM. Once your body gets adjusted to it, it's not bad at all.

Of course, I'm a chronic insomniac and NEVER get 8 hours of sleep. Ever. If I get more than 6, I consider myself lucky. So, I have little inherent sympathy for folks losing 1 hour of sleep 1 day a year.

I have yet to see a reasonable/rational argument for standard time.

The amount of daylight in my bedroom when I am asleep or awake in the morning is completely irrelevant.
The same can be said for morning commutes.
The same can be said for work hours.

The amount of daylight for after work is relevant.
Relevant for sports. Hobbies. Errands.

Where is the evidence that standard time is irrelevant?
It is called standard time but we have chosen to only use it 4 months out of the year.
I'm glad we are choosing to use it 0 months out of the year.

Again, I haven't seen a rational argument against daylight savings.

It is odd that people think changing the clock time increases day light. The light increases everyday after Dec 21 until June 21 where it again begins to decrease.

If left alone you would have plenty of daylight adjustment naturally.

It is like cutting of a foot from your blanket and adding it to the other side and claiming your blanket is longer.

All they do is go from a dark evening to a dark morning, and vice versa.

I really think it goes back to being a kid and coming home when the street lights came on. You wanted as much daylight as possible. Living in FL, I enjoy watching the sunset on the beach, after work. It's more difficult to do during standard time. I like the sunshine.
