then you need to go ahead and sign him up for private coaching lessons ASAP, like yesterday. His certain MLB future depends on it.

Long toss is ok for a mature arm. 8 is to young to throw long distance. At that age 60ft is plenty. Work on mechanics like arm position, hips, feet. Put him at short and have a bucket on its side at first have him make the throw while you stand by coaching him up. At that age just work on getting it right. When he gets older Olympic lifting will give you more power than long tossing 5 days a week. I coached for 18 years at many levels, just be patient and spend time working him out as much as he wants.

a majority of our throwing usually stays about the 60 ft range. I'll push him out a bit further to 80-90 ish range but keep volume very limited at that range.

So he's still playing 7 year old coach pitch?

The bases are only 60'....as long as he can throw 60' then thats all you need to worry about.

He's not going to be throwing anyone out from right field.....thats likely where he will playing

8 might be a bit young. However, if you're looking for a program, purchase Alan Jaeger's program. He is considered to be one of the best for long tossing. Driveline Baseball uses elements of AJ's program in their weighted ball program.

Builds arm strength by using the entire body and arm. Motion is a bit different because of distance , so it works muscles that are not always worked in normal throwing/pitching motion.

Long toss let me stretch my arm out. I had shoulder issues and had to move from 3rd to 2nd in high school because I could barely get the ball across the diamond due to the pain, yet long toss wasn't an issue. You aren't throwing it as hard as you've got necessarily. It's just a long throwing motion using your "bigger" muscle groups as opposed to a quick throw like I'd make across the diamond.

True. But I know a lot of people with incredibly strong/fast legs that can’t throw a ball out of their shadow

The rationale is just like how you would increase your bench press. You’d bench press at near max weight. Well, you throw the same way.

My best advice would be long toss combined with band stretching

when i have him throw at a longer distance, i'm always trying to have him keep the throws on more of a rope. Should i be letting him just air it out more with an arch?
