Help me understand the rationale behind Long Toss drill

So, kind of funny i googled earlier "8 year old baseball arm strength" or something to that effect and one of the early google results was this thread.
LINK /
Yay chicken. The overwhelming response was long toss drills. SO i've watched some videos and just trying to grasp what the main point is.
Is it to get the kids to push their arm limits in distance or is it just to give them more reps at a bit of longer distance than a norm close range toss?
I see some drills they stretched their throwing to a max and then worked their way back in making higher velocity throws at shorter and shorter distances.
And i'm still asking for a very youthful age bracket. Say 7-9 year old ages.
Obviously accuracy is most important at a young age but should i be more dialed in on velocity of throws or the distance of throws?

Chicks dig the long toss.

which was what? a lot of what was said is don't have your kids throw as far as they can though. So just keep a kid within 80-90% of his max distance and just build reps at that type of range?

Kids shouldn’t start long toss drills until they are at least 9-10 years old.
8 is too young.

Doesn’t matter.

It helps stretch your arm out. Simple as that. They shouldn’t be throwing it on a rope. Thus, long “toss”.

for just this drill?

Shouldn't be doing long toss drills until maturity in high school.
Saying this as an outfielder who would long toss in warm ups then proceed to cake arm in icy hot to numb the pain. (not just me, majority of the kids on my team) Freshman/sophomore year, icy hot. Junior/senior year, became a man and could long toss no problem.

My coach said if the pain wasn’t in a joint, keep throwing
I had a fricking rocket arm because of him

Don't worry about it too much. Khayden will not be playing in the Majors.

Best way to get faster is by running fast more often. Same principle applies to throwing a ball. Arm has to move faster and faster to throw the ball farther and farther.

If your 7 year old is throwing ropes across the outfield you need to get them to Cuba where they can be properly trained into a big leaguer.

For just this dril
Yes. Once he is warmed up his natural ability will dictate his velocity, with less chance of pain or injury, due to the fact that he warmed up first.
