Help Me Understand "Q" Better

This is in reference to the "Q" thread on the political board that is over 4000 pages long.
By googling I understand it is someone who supposedly has high level government clearance an is an anonymous poster on 4chan who drops bits of information.
It seems like obvious bullshite, but when you read the thread on the political board, there are some people who believe some crazy shite and I don't know if they are trolling or if they are serious.
Can someone give me more details? What exactly does this person believe? And do people really believe some of the crazy shite they say they do?
