The medical marijuana company Vireo Health in New York has received kosher certification.

Vireo’s vaporization cartridges, oils and capsules will be dispensed with a stamp of approval from Orthodox Union, the Times Union reports.

“Today’s [Wednesday’s] announcement sends a really powerful message to people of all faiths and backgrounds that using medical cannabis for the purposes of alleviating pain and suffering in no way, shape or form represents an embrace of pot culture,” said Ari Hoffnung, Vireo’s CEO.

Vireo’s sales will begin in January 2016.
It's been a long time since I was in Sundee school, but I don't remember this one. I didn't know something like weed needed to be kosher.

Yeah, but we still learned old testament teachings. I've long since stopped being religious, and of the probably hundreds of times I've burned with Jewish people, not once did we swing by a rabbi's house and get him to bless our weed.

Well it definitely does need to be kosher if we're talking about edibles. I'm not sure about smoking or vaping it.

Anything they ingest would have to be Kosher. Just means a Rabbi blessed it though. And that it wasn't grown by pigs.

It all depends on the way the Rabbi processes the buds.... I'm sure the lab has to have a kosher set up...

The rabbi performs many jobs in the Jewish culture. He is not just a religious leader. He's also a historian, teacher, and most importantly, food inspector. Much of the Jew's success in the ancient world was due to their Kosher eating laws. These rules were highly effective at preventing food poisoning and other food born illnesses, allowing for lower death rates than their host cultures and neighbors.

Keeping Kosher was common sense for people living in a desert. Today, with modern refrigeration and preservatives, this duty of the rabbi as a food inspector is a little outdated, but many Jews still cling to the tradition. For those who keep Kosher, nearly everything they eat must be inspected and blessed to ensure its purity.

There's a lot more to it than that. If you made weed butter and then cooked a steak in it, that would probably not be kosher, because there's a rule saying that you can't cook an animal in its own milk.

I'm not saying this is a realistic scenario for ingesting weed edibles, but it's just an example.

You couldn't eat an edible with non-kosher gelatin (like from a pig), for instance. That's a realistic example I guess.

Yep. You would have to cook it in weed canola oil or something. No meat and dairy in the same meal. No shellfish. No pork.

Getting certified kosher is a fricking racket. We had our bakery certified. I can't remember how much it cost (it was significant). Rabbi breezed through the plant, picked up his check, and deemed us kosher compliant. Took less than 30 mins. fricking bullshite shakedown is all it was.

What? I thought it was just because the ancients had no refrigeration and those were the foods that spoiled the fastest. And what success?

But carp is kosher, and that's a creature that literally eats shite.
