I would find the contractor that built your house and and see if they have a record of the fabricator they've for the countertops

Granite isn't fabricated, it's a natural stone. While the contractor might know the name that the granite company gave to the stone, the only way to "match" it is to get a slab that was cut from the same stone (which is long gone by now).

Does the fact that it's been affected in that manner change it from igneous to metamorphic? I guess it does. Right?

Yes.

I understand granite is natural. However, if the OP would like to know the name of the granite, finding the fabricator would be the best bet of locating the same lot of the stone used for the island; You'll be surprise how many remnant pieces fabricators hold on to, at least my old shop used to.

My counter is quartzite, which is a metamorphic rock. Are you saying the OP's island slab might be quartzite?

Here's a portion of ours:

I am saying his isn't granite. Granite is a completely different rock type, by category, than what the OP has.

I think it is gneiss.

As for yours,
Cool counter top! Would you like to know how it was made?

Sure! As long as you don't test me on it later.

Ok. So, in your case, this quartzite is made of a series of thin beds of quartz sand. That's why it's banded. Then, over time, the beds of sand get put under pressure and fluids go in the open spaces and cement the grains of send together. After this compaction and cementation, it is lithified as quartz sandstone.

AND THEN this whole body of rock was put under more heat and pressure as it was buried further and further...

Until that stops and it's all thrust up back to the surface and exposed for humans to slab it.

Basically, this rock went from underwater to your kitchen.

I agree with you that it's a beautiful item to own and appreciate.

OP you may not be able to match it. It's uniquely beautiful. It might not be possible to find closely matching stone.

Thanks!

The wide variety of colors found in natural stone is amazing (to me).

The kitchen was staged for photos after it was remodeled.

Having said that, we've got a lemon tree full of lemons right now.

To answer your question: Hardly any.

IMO... You really don't want matching island and counter granite. Go with something "complimentary" to be stylish.

Which, ironically, was my porn name.
