95 confirmed fatalities in western North Carolina.

This has really brought the crazies out. There are people out there who legitimately believe that Helene has actually killed as much as 8 times the people that Katrina killed.....that's right, 10,000+. Some random woman made a Tictok video saying that North Carolina had ordered ten thousand body bags from her company, and needed more when they could get them. There are other "accounts" of bodies stacked everywhere, and accounts with a crap ton of followers are spreading this stuff. It is insane.

Of course, it didn't help matters the other day when the coroner, or whoever is in charge of the tracking, revised the count down several because, evidently, they've had a problem with recently buried bodies that were washed out of their graves being added to the count (that bit seems to be legitimate, released by authorities).

There are a number of people online spreading that thousands of people are still missing.

What, no FEMA coffins? They are actually grave liners which cover a casket before being lower into the ground. Nutters gotta nut

I was there for 14 days,,,,all up in the mtn towns,,,,,there’s people in all that debris, cadaver dogs were hitting on the scents in all that rubble,,,,,I doubt it will be 10,000, but when I left the missing persons list was more than a thousand. Hope the count isn’t that high. But it will be higher than what’s being officially reported lately

This account has 12k+ followers, and used the grifter/reality tv star Eustace Conway to push the narrative that the death toll is in the tens of thousands, and that it was done intentionally.

Hurricane Helene BODY COUNT: 20K? refrigerated semi trucks loaded with the dead. Morgues are full.

Lives gone too soon; businesses decimated, families torn apart. Duke Energy opened their floodgates DURING the Hurricane and 13 inches of rain became 25 inches. Criminal?

youtu.be/UdcO3bKrlqo?si…

Really this many people dead? 20K, 30K, maybe even 40,000 people dead in NC from Helene.

This is nothing about nothing, but I went to school with his brother for a semester. If I recall, I met Eustace briefly one night at a social gathering. This was 30 or more years ago.

That is pretty safe to say considering it won't even be near 100.

There were only 3 in the entire county that Lake Lure and Chimney Rock are in. Early posts on social media claiming thousands were in the muck and in trees, etc. That Chimney Rock smelled of death etc.

Of course, it smelled like death. Billions of microbes died off in the drying silt, unknown numbers of fish and invertebrates rotted, and many higher animals, such as possums, raccoons, foxes, deer, skunks, etc., died in the floods and mud slides. In some of the SM posts about the ludicrous death tolls you could just feel the joy, despite feining dispair, of being able to "report" massive numbers of deaths.

Officials in Buncombe County, North Carolina, where Asheville is located, announced that the number of fatalities caused by Hurricane Helene in the county was overcounted.

The death toll in Buncombe County was previously reported to be 72, Sheriff Quentin Miller said during an Oct. 3 briefing.

As of Tuesday, FOX Weather confirmed that the number of deaths in the county has been lowered by 30 to 42, based on information from the Office of the North Carolina Chief Medical Examiner. However, this number might rise.

My sister, 6 miles ne of Asheville, got her water back yesterday. They were three days short of a month without running water; some still don't have it. Since they were told it might be December before they got it back, this is a huge relief. Now all they have left is clearing the yard (it was full of trees) and having the roof repaired. At least they can function normally now.

That alone kept New Orleans smelling like death until at least after Christmas from Katrina. It took several heavy rains to wash that away

I saw the USACE moved a portable RO water treatment plant to UNCA.

20 Miles of the Parkway opened yesterday between MM 285 and 305 that is going to really help some of the locals move around up there. That is near Grandfather Mountain that opened back up yesterday.

The progress made in a month is actually amazing to me. It will be months before roadside debris is removed, just the sheer tonnages involved, not to mention up and down hills and mountains, on winding roads.

FWIW, post Hurricane Gustav the Baton Rouge actually did something smart. It leased land to set up a shredding operation for trees and tree limbs then sold/gave the shredded wood in 18 wheeler quantities to companies in the mulch sales business. Even giving it away was a cost savings of $35 per ton. As with all such things, logistics is the biggest cost. It certainly is with building demolition and Superfund clean up.

I was in Asheville yesterday.

The place still smells.

Brown cloudy water still coming out the faucets.

Yard signs everywhere advertising for construction and mold services.

Has a long way to go.

One month since is nothing. Being able to travel down highways, even at reduced speeds is something. The smell will be around for months

If all of the destruction from Helene wasn't enough, the residents of the greater Asheville area are now worried about wildfires. There are downed, dried up trees everywhere, and no rain since the hurricane. Be careful out there.

Just got back from drinks after the Concert for Carolina.

It was very good for an ad hoc show. All the proceeds went to the victims, and they also live streamed it for the price of a ticket. One thing I thought was cool is that they live-streamed it free for people in the affected area.
