I suppose at this point, if the public event is free and typically attended by trash of both skin tones, and the event hours extend past dark, gunshots should be expected

Hammond holds two other well attended events (the semi annual air show and the annual renaissance festival) among others that don’t have this issue. Additionally the semi regular downtown events and the weekly farmers market don’t attract the trash at all even being free to attend.

The why is pretty evident, the what to do about it is a little less clear

Sadly we live in times (and a geographic area) where you just can’t hold large, free admission type events. The outcome is always the same.

If any OT’ers are looking for a small, safe, clean, and enjoyable festival to add to the calendar, I highly recommend the German Festival in Roberts Cove. At the end of the day there was barely even a speck of litter on the ground. Couldn’t believe I was in Louisiana. They hold it in October each year.

I went 25+ years ago and it wasn’t bad. Granted I was there during daylight hours.

Why do they have to ruin everything?

Wasn’t there another shooting at the Strawberry Fest in recent years?

ETA: yep, 2 people got into a shootout with each other at the 2022 fest

Yes, 2022. After dark. Shut it down at 6pm going forward.

What was the crowd like today? I’m guessing the shooting didn’t deter most folks.

Something is missing from those events.

ETA it seemed pretty hectic even in 2012

But it is only one tone that is causing this.
