Friends been bugging me to come for a visit for some time and I finally agreed to go spend the weekend. Completely forgot that Essence Fest was taking place. Already removed the Confederate flag license plate from my truck. Anything else I should know?

Meh. Essence isn't a bad festival at all. Just don't plan on being on Canal street or the quarter at night because the traffic and local hood rats will ramp things up more than usual this weekend.

Just don't go downtown or to the quarter at night. Seriously

All the neighborhood joints should be popping though because nobody wants to go downtown.

the high traffic areas are confined to a pretty small area. Not really a big deal

Avoid the area east of the 17th Street Canal and south of Lake Pontchartrain.

Semi-serious answer: The best thing you can do is to not use your vehicle. If staying in a hotel, leave it in the hotel’s garage. If where you’re going is not in easy walking distance, use a taxi or Uber. So much of the crime there revolves around vehicles. If you must go to the FQ, don’t be out there late.
