I know this, I’m not looking to just bail from where I am now. I just want to know what I can do now to help myself in the future (schools, etc.) and move up in the oilfield in general. A little knowledge never hurt anyone.

My passion for LSU sports bites me in the arse again. I was at O'Connell center in Gainesville and right after the game we won. I started a not so good thread about a 6'11" guard on our team. Got the bammer quickly

I been working offshore right at 30 years now.
stay with your crew members at the heliport and do what they do. don't be the guy somebody has to go find, that's the easiest way to go home early.
just be on time to your tower and all safety meetings, do what your told, and try to act like you want to be there.
the rest will fall into place.
depending on where you are going, there may be 300-400 people on the platform/ship, so stick with your crew till u figure things out!! good luck!!

RS, you still in the MWD/DD side of the business? If so I would be highly interested in talking to you.

Not looking for one. You mentioned possibly being neighbors and I wanted to discuss that off board.

I saved your email. Once I get immersed back into work I'll see if we have any open requisitions. I'll be resuming a regular work schedule starting next week.

I'm not involved in the O&G industry and I probably won't ever be, but it was pretty interesting reading through this thread.
None of my family has ever worked offshore and not many of my friends do and it's cool to learn about the routines and stuff that happens on a rig/platform.

No problem man. There’s a lot of us on here because it’s the nature of - and huge job sector in - many large areas of LA and Texas.
A lot of people make jokes about “oilfield baws” and all that crap, but in reality we’re just hard working people trying to do the best we can for ourselves and our families. We get a bad rep because of the obnoxious ones that spend their entire checks on over-financed trucks, etc and then when a downturn comes they’re left with nothing, but the vast majority are making the best livings we can with little education in most cases and the we’re doing a safe and, for the most part, environmentally sound job.

Spot on I read through all the comments and a ton of good advice. I have now worked on everything from midstream production to on and offshore deep water and international. Your background on land will make you “not green” and offshore is not a lot different than any other work just different toys and norms which had all been covered.
As with the rest of life don’t be a dick treat people with respect and it will be easy.
