Heading down to NOLA this weekend

Swore off going down there anymore, but I got swindled into helping 89 y/o grandfather move some stuff around his house, and helping watch my cousin's kids while she's on bed rest.
I'll be staying in the city off St. Charles a block south of Pontchartrain Expy. Arriving into NOUPT around 9pm. Wondering if I should sport a bulletproof vest for the short journey between the station and hotel? Is the streetcar safe at night?
Thoughts and prayers requested.
