meanwhile, you think you're giving your kids a way more meaningful childhood? sounds like your just lazy and cheap or jealous of other's athletic talents.

I'm all of the above.

Most of my friends whose kids do travel ball secretly HATE it. There are a couple that do enjoy it, but they're the exception.

bullshite. It's very much overrated. Been in it long enough to see it for what it is.

I was being sarcastic. It has become a billion dollar industry and there is nothing that suggest playing travel ball has any impact on a kid's future beyond HS.

But parents read websites like this and buy into it.

Its actually better for kids to play multiple sports and it not be an all year long thing for them.

Exactly, they stay for the perceived status.

Seems the Mom's are WAY into, dad's outside of a few weirdos, not so much. So many things we could be doing.

I am all for sports and it's great for kids to be involved, but to take up all the time, all year long is bullshite.

I don't think that's necessarily the case. For many, it's a machine that once you get in, there's no getting out.

They've bought into to this is some sort of golden ticket to the next level.
If I owned TV, the next announcer that used the phrase "the next level" would get staked on a pitcher's mound while I ordered a gallon of fire ants from Amazon.

Two gallons for "he's a special player."

I'd give them probation for "he'll be playing on Sunday" unless they added "...at the next level", then see rule 1.

ETA: I don't blame you, back9, you've been indoctrinated by the endless broadcast repetition. But you probably shouldn't tell me if you're a broadcaster in real life.

I am not sure if it is the kid doesn't want to walk away or the parents don't want the kid to walk away. Hard to tell.

I never see the kids hooping and hollering like it's ever meaningful to them.

They lure the parents in by saying if you want your kid to play in high school, travel ball and strength and conditioning camps at 11-13 is critical.

i mean, it is the difference for most kids between being able to play for a Rummel or Jesuit or having to play for Higgins

We got out, but we also didn't completely ingratiate ourselves to the experience. I remember one tournament all the parents were going to dinner at some lame restaurant. I'm an admitted food snob and wanted to go to a different place I had heard great things about, so the wife and I did. Son went with his friend's parents with the team. We got a lot of cold shoulders the next morning.

Ultimately it was my son's decision to not continue after the spring season was done.

I can see that mentality completely. I sure hope my son comes to this conclusion soon.

We did it for almost two years when my oldest was 10-11. All of us, including him, got burned out and shut it down. Never looked back, and the entire family was much happier.
