Even most of the Big Island is fine. OTOH this eruption could cause a massive landslide into the ocean with potential for a megatsunami that would frick up the west coast.

It's happened before. See all this rubble on the sea floor? That's from a landslide that caused a huge tsunami that hit the Oregon and Washington coast.

Due to the size and geography of the island the concerns with respect to the gas is still very localized. I drove from Kona to Hilo yesterday and it took almost 2 hours. Many people don't realize how big the island really is.
