I know of three people I worked with that have done this in the past three or so years.
One in his thirties quit his job and traveled by motorcycle from Houston through South America all the way to Peru. Shipped motorcycle to Europe and traveled through Morocco, Iran and some other areas I forgot. He is presently traveling through South East Asia (Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, etc.).
Another guy in his fifties I worked with saw the oil industry slowing and quit, sold his house and most possessions and bought a sailboat. He plans on sailing around the world with his dog. Presently half way up the East cost of the US. I suspect he is going to hang out there until Spring and head on over to Europe.
Another guy in his fifties quit working with us to just do some traveling. Went to Spain and learned Spanish, went to Alaska toured, camped, hiked, etc. and went other places I am forgetting.
All three guys unmarried although motorcycle man has a girlfriend who traveled South America and Asia with him.

I was trying to lift the dude up, didn't want to crush him by telling him that I get a minimum of four days off every week, and it's been that way for over a decade

I've got a former coworker that did something really similar. During a downturn they even let him take an unpaid leave of absence to do some travel.

I have too many liabilities currently to just quit my job, but all the power to you if you don't.

You should have plenty of vacation time. Go travel some for a couple weeks at a time.

Is this just a mid life crises thought?
Who gives a shite. Do it. Now. You have no wife and kids. If I had no wife and kids I would have checked the frick out a long time ago. Instead, I am now faced with the realization that I've quite possibly lived more than half my life and I haven't really seen shite. Add to that the simultaneous realization that I will likely not make enough money to ever retire, or if I do, I'll be well into my 70s.
So, maybe its a midlife crisis like mine is. But, you can walk away. So, do it. Would you rather do it now or when you're 65 or 70?
