Have you ever sit up with “the dead?”

I know it isn’t a thing anymore, but we’ve got some older folks around here. Have you ever sit up with the dead before? Ever heard stories from your daddy or granddaddy about it? I’m sure every time the wind blew or the floor creaked, it made the hair on your neck stand up.

My wife's mother passed away in October. My wife's dad, her husband, sat up with her in the funeral home the night before the service. He is old school Catholic and from deep south LA

I stopped sitting up with the dead when the dead started sitting up too.

Yes, the Methodist still do it. When a very good friend died his mother wanted the funeral at the Methodist church. He was a bit of a hell raiser and drank a lot so none of the members at the church would sit with him. Several of my friends and me stayed there all night. It actually kind of helped getting over his sudden death.
