Have you ever had to "stop, drop, and roll?"

This was pounded into my head in the lower grade school. I can remember posters, class time devoted to it, and I'm pretty sure we went over it at children's church and cub scouts.

But never once in all my years have I had to do it. I don't even know anyone close to me that has had to do it.

You'd think that it would occur more often given the vigor with which it is taught.

Nope, but I visited my brother's college one weekend. Woke up to find my LSU tshirt had caught on fire at some point in the night. Luckily it only burned a few inches of my shirt and not me. Not sure when I walked into a fire

Yep sure have. Was putting gas in a 4 wheeler as a kid and got gas on my leg/sock....went close to a fire shortly thereafter. Leg was on fire and I hit the ground and rolled instantly. I guess all those years of it being drilled into my head stuck with me. Unfortunately all it did was fan the flames and I had to sit up and basically smother it with my hands. 2nd/3rd degree burns....skin essentially melted off in spots. Just below the knee and all the way down to my sock line. Stupid, careless young teenager.

No, but I did burn my hand and singed my beard, eye brows, and bangs one time when lighting the pilot on my hot water heater. House smelt like burnt hair for 2 or 3 days.

Yes, but it was only the tips. Almost a tragedy.

When I was 19 my mother asked me to burn a large holly bush in the yard. I grabbed a can if diesel and doused the bush pretty well, lit a piece of paper and leaned in to drop it on the pile then step back as the flame caught.

What I didn't know was that someone put unleaded in the diesel can. The bush was in a small depression and there was no wind so the fumes just sank down to ground level.

What I accidentally did was create a bomb of sorts and just before the burning paper hit the pile, it hit the fumes and lit my world up with a loud "WHOOOMP! that knocked me back a few feet.

Around the time I hit the ground I realized I might well be on fire so I rolled (which did indeed put out a couple of small flames). Lots of first degree burns and singed arm and leg hairs, some 2nd degree burns and a couple of 3rd degree burns (one of which formed a crucifix on my right ring finger that lasted for a couple of decades).

Yep. Poured gasoline on a leaf pile and bent over to light it. I assumed it would lifht like bbq starter fluid. shite blew up in my face and I def hit the ground and rolled.
Luckily ended up with just some burnt hair

About as much as I've had to not panic in quicksand.

I did watch a guy try to light a fart once - his fuzzy pants caught fire for a brief instant.
