Strong chance it was the ativan or versed (or both) that they had you on. Same thing happened when I was coming around the first time after my surgery, so agitated and combative they had to restrain my arms and re-sedate me. I remember the hallucinations and severe anxiety I had the first few days the second time I was awoken, my fiancee at least had enough medical knowledge as a dentist to insist they stop giving me those drugs as it was obvious they weren't helping. Since then my allergy warning info has included those two drugs. Most doctors have insisted it wasn't anything to do with then but I have spoken to anesthesiologists that have stated their are cases where those anti-anxiety drugs made it worse and some protocols are changing now.

Depends if you’re sedated during the intubation period but I would suggest that if you’re semi conscious and breathing with mild vent support, like some background positive pressure, it probably feels like breaking through a large straw.

I had 4 EDG's and a hiatal hernia repair since Dec but I think only on the hernia was I using their Oxygen to breath. Not sure but never take your esophagus for granted.

I have. Was pretty sedated until the day they removed it.

Sorry my mistake. I think that may have been what she was referring to. It sounded like it was a case of too many patients for the “normal” standard of care.

They had you on a vent for 2 days after a valve replacement?
Did you have anything else going on, complications...?

Sounds right, but I have always had strange reactions to medication/anesthesia. I had some weird memories during that time, that I know were not existing. Sometimes, I scream, sometimes I cry, or am extremely combative, or extremely calm. It makes no sense. I had my wisdom teeth removed at 16 (the two on the right were completely in, bottom left was 50% in, and top left was impacted, so they pulled them all - still pissed, because all of my teeth shifted back on the right side), I remember I kept trying to close my mouth (no idea why), then I dozed off, then I was crying uncontrollably. I was super embarrassed. And for the love of all things holy, do not give me Percocet.

I'll tell you something even more disconcerting is having chest drain tubes pulled out, no pain but you can feel the tubes in your body cavity as they come out.... ?
I completely agree. Chest tubes are horrible and the docs always seem to want to jiggle them around, which makes it worse

While they didn’t jiggle mine around, nor did it necessarily hurt, it was one of the weirdest sensations I’ve ever felt.

Post lung transplant I was for less than a day and I obviously don't remember it. I do remember being on ecmo though.
Posted on 6/9/26 at 4:15 pm to SaintlyTiger88
Yeah, it's called a CPAP

How was ECMO? Hose’s coming out your neck?

Are we out of ventilators yet?
Posted on 6/9/26 at 5:41 pm to SaintlyTiger88
Just once. Gallbladder surgery. I keep telling doctors that my body shrugs off anesthesia. And they keep laughing at me. And it is a pretty awful situation because I'm still not lying and no doctor believes it. But yeah, coming out of gall bladder removal, on the table I was on a vent. And I was not supposed to be awake at that point. Typical. They pulled out the ventilator tube and it took me maybe 20 seconds of gasping to breathe. The only bad part of that surgery.
Yeah, I knew someone on a ventilator. She kept trying to take it out. For a week. Bad times.

Had quad bypass. Woke up on vent with hands tied. Had a catheter guard on my wrist so to get a nurse to my room I would beat the guard on the bed rails. I spelled out "fluid" on my leg with my finger so they would suction my mouth. I chilled out after that and they came back in a little while and said I was good to go and took it out. Wasn't fun at the time but was a minor issue in a week long hospital stay. Hope I don't have to do that again.

Think doctors should be put on a vent and pumped full of these drugs so they can gain some perspective as part of their residency.

Mine were placed in the groin area due to the severity of my state at the time
