I don't understand how they could convict the guy. At no time did anyone say he was held down and forcibly fed alcohol. The Gruver kid could've said F it and left whenever he wanted to.

I'll say this, someone at the Advocate got cut during rush or didnt get invited to parties in college or something. Their coverage has been (ahem) less than balanced.

However, typically in these cases, they go after everyone involved over 21 that could have supplied the alcohol. And the prosecution & parents dont want anyone to know their little honor student was drinking and smoking his arse off the first time he was away from home.

This is just a bad situation all around. Can’t change anything, but hopefully some people learn from it.

Legally, I think the whole thing is a lot of horse crap.

Matthew Naquin comes off as a real loser, though. I don't completely discount the idea of going through an initiation process and paying dues to be in a private club, but the notion that anyone would suffer these things to be in a club with Matthew Naquin just perplexes me.

From what I've read the guy on trial (Naquin) sounds like a huge dickhead. He'll probably be found guilty if it's anything like the coverage suggests.

I don't know. From what i heard, the prosecution tried to get Gruver's drug and alcohol abuse history squashed, but was unsuccessful.

I don't see how the parents of Gruver, could rightly want to prosecute another kid for the death of their own kid, who seemed to have alcohol/drug issues.

Unless i'm wrong on the situation.

You might be right. Gruver's roommate said he was only sober 5 of the 28 days he was on campus, and had been at bars almost every night. I've also heard, though, that some people testified that Naquin was intentionally targeting Gruver and refused to tone it down when actives warned him. It's an interesting and sad case.

Agreed, his attitude & general douchey-ness isnt doing him favors. The wife & I have been talking about this since we both were greek at our schools. We're of the mind that maybe we don't want our kids to do this. Or at least know when to walk away with your dignity & integrity if shite gets weird or dangerous.

Actually, I want my kids to be such big nerds that they would rather study for med/engineer/law school and support us in our old age rather than dick around with greek orgs.

Yeah, but he's going to prison for being an a-hole? I get that he's a bit of a terd, but unless he physically forced Gruver to drink, or trapped him in the house so he couldn't leave and then forced him to drink, i dont see how you convict someone like that.

Did I read that right, defense rested without calling a witness?

Yikes if you're on Hillar's team...

he was 21 or older, could purchase the alcohol. Actively participated in ritualized hazing, even more so directly at Gruver. Gruver was lead to believe and intimidated by a campus organization that membership was conditional on his consuming all that alcohol. Way too much statute and case law behind this.

ETA: Hillar HAS to get a conviction on this for PR if nothing else. They picked Naquin because he's the easiest path to that end. But putting it all on one a-hole kid for negligent homicide when Gruver was boozing it every f-ing day? come on.

This will be an interesting outcome regardless. Does anyone know the status on the obstruction charges for deleting the cellphone messages?

Honestly, being on the jury for this would blow. One one hand, you have a guy who sounds like a douche canoe hazing someone through extreme alcohol consumption. On the other hand, you have the recipient of the hazing, who is consuming all of this willingly and has a history of drug and alcohol abuse.
