When i see a man hitting or fighting a woman, i see the man as “woman-like.” As in he feels threatened by her or that she is his physical equal, therefore diminishing his strength in my eyes.
As far as self-defense, minimally necessary force is ok imo.

I think it has changed. I’m 68. I was raised to not strike a female under any circumstances.
We were taught to open doors for them and help them to be seated also.
