I know they drug (or is it dragged) a black guy in Vidor... and this was well after it was the social norm.

Something happened in Vidor, too. Or it was just a really big stronghold for the KKK

Vidor is on I-10 about 10 miles east of Beaumont. Jasper is what, 40-50 miles to the north.

Santa Fe is kind of between Houston and Galveston.

There was a bad school shooting in Santa Fe a few years ago.

I think the murder you're referring to was in Jasper. 3 white guys dragged a fellow named Byrd to his death. One of the 3 was executed. I think another died of natural causes. And the 3rd is in prison for life. Avoided the death sentence by testifying. Need to confirm this though.

ETA: Correction - 2 of the 3 were executed by the State of Texas. The third is eligible for parole in 2038.

Last time we had a thread that mentioned Vidor they made it sound like a Texas version of Holden, LA.

when i was a kid in the early 90s we went to a baseball tournament in santa fe. drove by the grand dragons house. Had all these gargoyle statues in the yard and about a 6 ft chain link fence around the property. after the last game we ate at the black eyed pea and the 2 black kids on our team we in a real big hurry to get out of there. they had definitely been warned.

A childhood friend of mine was the head ball coach at Vidor HS for a while. I think they might have won state one year.

I grew up in Beaumont and played football and ran track in vidor. I never saw anything overtly racists but the black guys on my teams usually didn't go with us when we played in vidor. I did drive by a Klan rally in the Jasper area when I was in my early 20s. Freaked me out.

when we played our game against them they were calling us mud people and mongrels (cause we had 2 black kids and maybe 3 mexicans). these were 11 and 12 year olds. dont think i ever enjoyed beating the shite out of a team as much as we did that day. id say SF is, or at least was, comparable to the other two cities.

Lived in jasper for a short while. These three don’t have much on evadale and Saratoga. The US housing director tried to intergrate vidor one time through public housing. Don’t think it went as planned.

I was born and raised in Vidor. 90% of the people there are great people with good hearts and don’t discriminate. You have the 10% meth heads, redneck trash that you have in a lot of other cities. We get a bad rap because of the klan rallies they used to hold, but that was way before my time.

Having said all of that, I’m hesitant to say that’s where I’m from to black people, because they instantly assume I’m racist. It’s annoying, and I doubt people will forget the past.

It is what it is. But I can guarantee you, if you go to the Walmart, you will 10000000% see people that could have been in Tiger King.
