What’s really incredible is just how few of these people actually have journalism degrees. I do, and I am ashamed to be identified with such useless people.
A PhD in “romantic comedies?” What in the actual f***?! I work with PhD-holding people for a living and these kinds of degrees are why I address exactly NONE of them by “Dr.” I’ve let more than a few know that my wife is a nurse. I refer to her boss as a doctor. If you didn’t go to medical school, you’re not a doctor. You’re a theorist who was afraid to step out and get a job when you finished your undergrad.

After more than 10 years at BuzzFeed I’m proudest of the fact that I was the first employee to have the brilliant idea to date a colleague, now my wife and mother of my boy. I also made a lot of nice things, mostly about cats. All my love to colleagues and lifelong friends today.

From her website:

I have a PhD in Arts and Media from the University of New South Wales and a BA in Sociology from Princeton University. My academic work focused on Hollywood romantic comedies; my doctoral thesis was about how the genre depicts gender, sex, and power. You can read it here, if you really want to.

Who knew such research wouldn't be a 7 figure salary magnet?

That is just mind-boggling. Two useless degrees from two respected institutions. How (and why) do you pull that off?

That's a fairly ignorant (small minded?) view on things. Granted there are folks that do have PhDs in some light fields, where they conducted poor "science" to get them, that vigorously insist on being called "doctor" in every setting, but that doesn't take away that they did in fact earn a doctorate.
Not all PhDs are in "theoretical" fields. A MD (Doctor of Medicine) is a professional degree, as is a JD (Juris Doctor). A PhD is a research degree.
Are dentists not doctors in your opinion then? Or veterinarians?

Wells she’s from Australia so she probably got some sort of tuition break for that, if not totally free.

The movie PCU is becoming a goddamn prophecy.
In the movie, one of the characters was doing a thesis that at any point during the day, there was a Gene Hackman movie on TV

Seems to me they shouldn't be as respected anymore.

Not really. I work for a public university, so the vast majority of those I come into contact with possess these degrees in “light fields” and are OCD about being recognized as “doctors.” You’re correct that there are plenty who actually have meaningful work under their belt and likely derserve the recognition, but those are also typically the ones who don’t seek it. Unfortunately, they are getting to be the exception. Thanks to things like PhD’s in “gender studies” and the like, the value of such titles has been severely diminished.
quote:
JD (Juris Doctor)
That’s fair, but few people in the associated fields go by “doctor.”
quote:
A PhD is a research degree.
And when you can put a “Dr.” in front of your name because you “researched” the history of gender roles in romantic comedies, I think you can see why very few of these are actually meaningful to society these days.

Perhaps you’re taking me too literally on purpose. Let me rephrase....both of those are “Doctors of medicine.” I would certainly still count those as both are simply more specific or alternate fields of medicine. Again, it’s not a “doctor” of sociology, history, English or African-American studies, etc. I think you get what I mean.
