where is the savings for the customer if we have to check ourselves out?
You checking yourself out is most likely the reason prices aren’t higher than they are. With inflation and the bs “living wage” movement, businesses have to make a choice. Go to self checkout with less employees, or jack prices through the roof.

You would rather wait in a long arse line?
I took on remodeling my house, so I was in Lowe's constantly. On day, I'm about 5th in line checking out from lumber pro area. Dude behind me has a about 8 sheets of drywall some mud and small stuff. He did get tired of waiting and just wheeled past, then out the door. Then they opened another lane and I walking out just in v time to see the other guy pulling out no one said a word or cared .. It seemed. Also doubt he came back to settle up

The self checkout every where problem.

so you want him to drive to another small town and waste 15 minutes or 30 minutes instead of having places fix the problem like the old days?

quote:Hell, I wish more places had self-checkout, so I suppose it's a matter of opinion. But when one of the most common knocks against it in this thread is that they're full of people, then obviously enough people like them that it's not a problem for everyone.

Not necessarily always. My local QFC must have eight registers but they only have one cashier. Both the cashier and the self-checkout line will be 15 deep and they won't give a shite.

quote:Difference being, that, although they're both 15 deep, one line leads to 4-10 kiosks, and the other leads to a single register.

That's what I like about Rouse's. Occasionally the line would be long during lunch hour.

The Lowe's self checkout is out of fricking control.
On a bright and sunny warm April Saturday afternoon - PEAK BUYING TIME - they have one cashier on the retail side (maybe), and one on the contractor side (maybe). The rest are self-checkout.
Which is not so bad, I like self-checkout, but at my lowes they rarely let you check it out yourself. And then the attendant acts pissed off because the 83 irrigation fittings I bought are all a different product, and the ones that are the same, I have no idea how many I bought, because that's not how you do it (you buy far more than you think you'll need and still won't have enough).
I mean, ma'am, I didn't ask for it to be like this.
And if they do let me check my stuff out, they're lording over me to the point where I start to question whether or not I really am a criminal.
I mean damn, if you're going to make me check myself out, then let me do it or get behind the scanner and get to work like normal. It's awful, and it backs up traffic terribly because people, especially the elderly, are understandably not good at it.

The difference being to me is that when I went there years ago after work I could grab a couple of things and it would be a quick in and out. Now I'm waiting what seems forever no matter what I do.
Self checkout is a good option but these stores should still keep a few cashiers. Its not a bad idea at peak hours and jobs are still a good thing too.

This is why I go through the garden center.
But I’m still pissed. Today I had two hanging pots. 3 little carabiners, 2 S hooks, one screw in eye hook, can of spray paint, water filter for the fridge and a 5 pound bag of soil. 137 fricking dollars. Given the filter was 54 by itself but holy shite. I used to sell spray paint for next to nothing. Minimal margin. Lowe’s wants 10 dollars a can.

quote:I agree with you. If the demand is there, and it seems like it usually is, judging by the lines typical of the traditional check-out registers, then it would be ideal if staffing and open lanes reflected that.

But that doesn't cause me to dislike self-checkout (or you either, as you said) or prefer the traditional lanes. Most stores seem to have a need for more open traditional lanes, but, given a choice I almost always prefer self-checkout.
It's not like checking out from most stores was gravy before, and self-checkout ruined it. Tradional lanes suck in their own ways.

Are you an employee of the gas station? If you don’t want to check yourself out, then don’t. They have regular lines, too.

They have four self checkouts. One is guaranteed to be out, the other has a couple old folks trying to figure out how to buy a cactus, another is jammed up because the system didn't recognize the blinds that a girl is buying, so that leaves......one for all the baws who just want to get in and out of the joint.
You just described my Lowe’s to a T.
