re: Has there ever been a lazier generation than the latest generation of "workers" ?

Our system is rigged against Gen Z and somewhat against Millennials - and it's not at all kind to any other generation - the school loans, crappy economy, rising housing costs. They've done the math and most of them see that the American dream is a fantasy. I don't like a lot of the trends we see, but I can't blame them for not wanting to go into the office. For most of them, the entirety of their jobs revolve around work on a computer - their generation grew up with the internet - in their eyes they don't see why they should leave the internet and laptop they have at home to go to the internet and desktop at work.
Yep
The American Dream is so dead that the democrats have to give 20k to every illegal just to get them to come here from Honduras or whatever
Makes me wonder if the right move for millenials and gen z isn’t to move to “third world” countries that still have freedom and your whole check doesn’t go to Israel and Ukraine

Isn't there a dress code.
There is a dress code but it just says professional attire. The problem is that a lot of the younger teachers don't seem to know what that means. One of them told me that she wears a t shirt and pajama pants when she shops and runs errands.

According to executive leadership at my company, productivity has not been impacted by work from home policies.

Not true.
We will need fewer human inputs with AI and automation. A lot fewer.
People outside of the industry commenting on the industry. AI still has a long way to go, it is a very good comparison saying it is similar to shipping your development tasks offshore.
AI is essentially just machine learning, which has been around for a long time. It learns via human input, if the human input is incorrect it will learn incorrectly.
Same exact scenario will occur, requirements are gathered, sent to an offshore team, it's coded and sent to production. Six months later their horribly written code will hit some sort of issue and there will be no one around to fix it.
Companies have already began structuring with this in mind, there are onshore SME's that derive architecture and requirements to communicate to offshore. If AI replaces anything in the near future it will be the folks sitting in India and Manilla.

If you work with competitive people it will not.
However, Zoomers and Alpha are not very competitive people.

It would seem to me, that human nature being consistent over time, that the most ambitious among them would exploit this laziness and rise more quickly to the top.
As a student of history, I think this depressingly under performing generation might likely end up being the heroes we need. The fourth turning theory speaks of this and I’m hopeful it might be the case. Problem solvers and heroes come from out of nowhere when you least expect it.

This is true. Its never been easier for competitive people.

“This next generation sucks and it’s going to ruin our country”, a tale as old as time.
We have too many old geezers on this board who start threads like this.

I think it will eventually turn, but right now, you’re correct. Just wait until the current 10-15 year olds hit the workforce. I teach seventh grade, and it takes an act of Congress to get them to do almost anything. I hate to see when they have an actual job.

Things don't look good for gen Z. I wouldn't have motivation either.
Things look great for a Gen Z with drive and ambition.
They can be sharks swimming in a pool of fat, lazy guppies.

My 16 year old granddaughter lives with me to finish school, she's amazing. She's taking all college classes, works in summer, has play practice after school til 7p (Shes the lead)
Her and her peers will set the world on fire. They have drive and ambition, and behave better than most adults.
Any young kids with ambition and drive will succeed, the competition is shitty.

Oh, they absolutely exist. They are just few and far between. You’re right that they will absolutely thrive as adults in the modern environment.

No doubt. Most of her friends are similar. They have jobs, hobbies and take school serious.
They will do fine in this world.

So overblown. AI will eliminate jobs by creating more jobs in other areas.
You couldn't be more wrong.
So according to you, Companies are investing Billions in AI so they have more employees to pay and not fewer ?
Yea, that makes sense.
AI is already getting proficient at writing software.
So instead of paying 50 Software Developers $100k+ a year to write the code, you can pay a handful of Software Developers $80k a year to tweak the AI Developed Code.
And yes, salaries will drop because Software Developers will be fighting over the remaining jobs, jobs that don't require the intelligence that they used to.

You are lumping all IT into a bucket of software developers. .NET and java programmers are a dime a dozen, that's why they have already been sent offshore. There is a hell of a lot more in IT SDLC than the front end app dev code writers.

All I have seen AI do is screw-up everything. It's nearly impossible to get a real person on the phone anymore. If your problem don't fit in a simple yes or no box, you are screwed. It has totally slowed down the world, and has me, and a lot of other people, pulling their hair out. They also have AI chat bots that are spamming web forums with propaganda. That's also getting annoying, because you don't know if you are chatting with a real person.
It wasn't but just a few years ago that boomers were going through their mid life crisis and saying the same things as us. Listen to this song from the 80's by Billy Joel, who is a boomer. Billy Joel

They're always looking for a handout, for others to pay off their student loans, to give them free healthcare, to give them jobs they aren't qualified for etc.
I have known several of these because I have hired a lot of people but also because my kids are that age group too. This group is the closest thing we have to communists and socialists. The way they have been brought up, i.e. not work of anything, has led them to believe that it is better to get public benefits than work for your own.
The biggest problem with this group is that they are so spoiled that they want the platinum level standard of living but cannot comprehend that communism/socialism would drop them so far down the level of society they are accustomed to that they would realize their misconceptions.
